Wednesday, July 12, 2006 · Page 17 Cottam Cubs Mosquito Baseball The Cottam Mosquito Cubs travelled to Harrow last Wednesday and got behind the eight ball early to a 12-4 deficit, but fought back valiantly with patience at the plate, timely hitting and much improved defensive play. A true team effort was shown by all on both offence and defense to tie the game in the top of the seventh, only to lose by one run in Harrow's bottom half. It only shows that you should never give up! On Saturday morning the Cubs travelled to Windsor to play the Expo minors. Nik Veigli got his first start of the season giving up a few runs early but had a very supportive team behind him in pitching, hitting and fielding. Justin Orton and Mitchell Taveirne teamed up for a great play to tag out a runner stealing home. Scott Smith went 4 for 4 leading the team in hitting that day. Also making contributions were Noah Wilson bringing the bat alive and Brett Rickeard laying down a bunt that resulted in a triple. Aggressive base running got the Cubs a lead that would not be challenged on this day. A great effort by all resulted in a 17-10 victory. On Sunday afternoon the Cubs hosted Harrow, falling behind 5-0 in the first inning but battling back in the next couple innings to take the lead and hold off Harrow for an 8-7 win! Highlights included excellent pitching by Justin Orton and a nice double from Scott Smith. After being hit in the ankle by a pitch, Micah Harris hauled in a nice fly ball, making it look easy! A great week of ball and the team continues to improve with each game! Keep it up, boys. Cottam Cubs Rookie Baseball The Cubs had plenty of baseball this week with three games on the schedule. Our first game was against Harrow and our bats came out cold but our defense held strong to keep us in the game even though we lost 14 to 10. Austin Scratch did a fine job at second base as well as Colton Vriesacker over at third. Harrow kept most of our hits to singles and did a great job defensively. Our second game was against Tecumseh Minor and our bats came alive with great hitting from all our boys. Cooper Chauvin had a big homerun and a nice triple came from Demars. The Conner Diemer brothers both had doubles as well as "Big" Ben Curtis. Brady Rickeard's bat was on fire as he went 3 for 3. Good defensive plays came from Josh Scratch, Ben Curtis at shortstop and Colton Vriesacker which helped make the final score, 25-14. Our third and final game was against Riverside Minor and again our bats seemed to be made of ice. Local Drag Race Results Saturday at the Grand Bend Motorplex saw LaSalle's Ed Smith win Top Eliminator over the redlighting Jade Atkinson out of Sarnia. Smith's Chevy powered dragster covered the quarter mile in 7.78 seconds at 170 miles per hour. Sunday at St. Thomas Dragway, Bob Beaudoin of Tecumseh used a 9.87 second pass on his 2001 Ski Doo to defeat Paul Geisel's 1976 Kawasaki from Wallenstein in the bike final. Leamington's Bill Ward was runner-up to Tillsonburg's Jeff Smith in Modified Eliminator. Chris Gubinski of Essex was also a runner-up, in Junior Dragster to Derek DeHoog of London. The boys had a good defensive game but our bats were cold. Eryk Wagner did a nice job to pound out two singles and Jeremy Orton had a big homerun. Good defensive plays came from Ben Curtis at third as well as Cooper Chauvin at first but it wasn't enough and the Cubs lost 8-4. Our next game is July 13 in Cottam against McGregor. Our sponsors for these game were M&B Trucking, Murry's Renovations and KLX Growers Ltd. ESSEX MOSQUITO `B' CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 He had a great hit that went way into the outfield and bounced out into the parking lot which drove in two important runs for the team. The boys were now on a roll with everyone up to bat hitting and making a base. Matt Krutsch, Vince Taylor, Brad Maroun, Alex Dunmore and Brody Masse all had great hits out into the field. Tyson Way got up to bat and followed suit by hitting a home run and bringing in Vince Taylor who was on base. The boys had now tied the Riverside Minor team and the crowd was on their feet cheering along with the boys in the dugout. Essex had come back from being down a few runs to tying the game $ 199 GT 200R 95 *$ CS 305 29995 with a 10-10 score.
