Appreciation Week May 3 to 7, 2010 In Halton, we are fortunate to have first-rate medical care available to us, thanks in large part to the skilled and dedicated physicians who have chosen to make this community home to their practices. At Halton Region, we believe it is important to recognize these physicians for their contribution to the health and well-being of Halton residents. For this reason, we recognize May 3 to 7 as Halton Physician Appreciation Week - a time when we acknowledge the valuable resource and role that our medical community plays in supporting a healthy Halton, and we say 'thank you' to our physicians for the excellent care they provide to our residents. Halton's Physician Recruitment Program has been working since 2003 to attract physicians to Halton to ensure that all residents have access to quality medical care. If you would like to find out more about Halton Physician Appreciation Week or Halton Region's Physician Recruitment Program, contact Angela Sugden-Praysner, Physician Recruitment Coordinator at 905-825-6000, ext. 7929, toll free 1-866-442-5866. Gary Carr Regional Chair Halton Physician Comp lete with The New Tanner Sports with The New Tanner Sports Murr golf tourney tees off on Monday By Frances Niblock This year, proceeds from the 26th an- nual Paul Murr Golf Tournament are earmarked specifically for cancer re- search, and for the first time, patient services and programs offered by the Georgetown-based Cancer Assistance Services, Halton Hills (CAShh). Tournament spokesman Allan Hall said CAShh will share in the proceeds, and the main benefi ciary, the Wellington Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, in- cluding the Acton branch, has agreed to direct tournament money to research, not administration. The tournament raised $50,000 last year and $758,000 over 25 years. "We think that with it going to specifi c research, it's more in mind with what our members think," Hall said on Friday, adding that the changes will be reviewed after a year to determine if they want to continue with the new funding benefi ci- aries. "Our only reason for our even consid- ering CAShh was that they are looking after local services. We just feel we are taking care of Acton's needs where they need to be taken care of (with) a little bit to CAShh and the balance to cancer research," Hall said. There are still some 7 a.m. tee-off times open on Monday (May 10) for the tournament, named in honour of the late Paul Murr, one of the organizers of the initial tournament to raise money for the Acton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
