Murr golf tourney tees off on Monday By Frances Niblock This year, proceeds from the 26th annual Paul Murr Golf Tournament are earmarked specifically for cancer research, and for the first time, patient services and programs offered by the Georgetown-based Cancer Assistance Services, Halton Hills (CAShh). Tournament spokesman Allan Hall said CAShh will share in the proceeds, and the main beneficiary, the Wellington Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, including the Acton branch, has agreed to direct tournament money to research, not administration. The tournament raised $50,000 last year and $758,000 over 25 years. "We think that with it going to specific research, it's more in mind with what our members think," Hall said on Friday, adding that the changes will be reviewed after a year to determine if they want to continue with the new funding beneficiaries. "Our only reason for our even considering CAShh was that they are looking after local services. We just feel we are taking care of Acton's needs where they need to be taken care of (with) a little bit to CAShh and the balance to cancer research," Hall said. There are still some 7 a.m. tee-off times open on Monday (May 10) for the tournament, named in honour of the late Paul Murr, one of the organizers of the initial tournament to raise money for the Acton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
