India The slides were excellent as was Mr Burt commentary We hear of India Holy Cows which are supposed to be one of the chief causes of India terrible poverty From our homes here in Canada we talk smugly of what we would do ever we had a chance of righting this seeming stupidity on India a part and for goodness sake religion and this makes It seem even more ridiculous to our Canadian eyes Mr Burt admitted that he was guilty of these same feelings before his trip and saw things at first hand He found that cows do serve their purpose in the agriculture economy producing Ghee a type of melted butter THIS HEIFER CALF Regal Maud brought at the Holstein Sale erf Stars held in connection with the Royal Winter Fair Toronto This is one of the highest ever paid for a heifer calf in Canada buffalo a naturally wild cow has been domesticated and used the same way as cattle as beasts of burden and for their milk and Ghee the water buffalo has not adjusted to domestic life and has a high mortality rate They have not adjusted to a life away from the rivers and water Mr Burt said the rural people were very hospitable and gave of their best in food and an amusing but all too often boring part of their hospitality was their tendency to precede all meals with long orations about the aims and objectives of the cooperative movement The Canadian United Cooperative movement wishes It had such persistent and eloquent members In Canada Give ovation Merle thanked Mr Burt for his interesting and informative presentation His sentiments were echoed by those In attendance in the ovation that followed his remarks Kenneth Graham zone fieldman commended president Denzil Lawrence for his work at the O A level especially as chairman of the taxation and assessment committee Mr Lawrence has also been the member for Halton County to O F A for many years In his president address Mr Lawrence announced his resignation as president at the end of this term He said although he and his wife would always be formers at heart he felt that there was some feeling to the effect that the best Interests of Federation of Agriculture would be best served If It had a practising farmer at its head Although he had enjoyed his years as president and had the time to devote to trips to Toronto etc he had come to agreement with the people aforementioned He also felt a person could hold an office too long to the detriment Members tend to lean on your leadership and even lose needed interest In the organization Take the time He felt the time had come for the farmers of to see the need of their organization most especially if agriculture is to find respect and its proper place In industry and for farm leaders to find or take the needed time to go to Toronto even if farm work must suffer a little and your neighbors call you a fool and do not appreciate what you are doing for them and agriculture In Die area Farmers tend to get pushed around enough as it is but if we have not means of uniting or having a voice in government It can be a lot worse Another thought to keep In mind Is an organization is only as strong as the Interest and strength behind it Your organization needs you and your interest and backing If the organization t suit you as it stands then attend meetings raise your voice use your vote where it counts put in the people who will do the Job and get in there and make your organization what you want Harold Middle bra ok gave a report on a meeting held that day between the Federation and area representatives with Darcy McKeough and told the group his outlook for the immediate future for area farmers in the tax situation His outlook was not too hopeful and seemed very confusing and upsetting to his listeners Merle Gunby spoke of Information he had as a
