Council hydro school board seats challenged School board seat Watson TOM WATSON Tom Watson was the first represen tative on the county board of education and is seeking re election He operates Watsons restaurant In Acton and lives on Church St Mr and Mrs Watson have six children Two are married the others are In three levels of education nurses training high school and public school with the high school girls in different areas business and commerce and academic He has lived in Acton all his life with the exception of five years with In World War II He was years on the Acton public school board six as chairman four on the district high school board two as chairman He was Acton high school boards representative on the Interim School Organization committee and in 1968 was elected to fill the first Joint Acton and scat I think we have taken a gigantic step forward toward equal education In Halton county The main area to benefit has been the north feared parochialism on the county board at first Mr Watson says but everyone has put the interests of the entire county first we in the north are now being attained with the wholehearted backing of ail the board members such as remedial reading psychological services availability of courses at General Brock better school area boundaries and bussing of students to outoftown schools for special classes I feel we ve just completed the organizational processes and Id like to have a part In evaluating the changes In program and organizational methods assessing the best of them and implementing necessary changes Hinton Acton merchant Bert Hlnton came to Acton in 1924 leaving only during World War He lives on Park Ave with wife Mary they hove two Sons and a daughter Cathy at high school He has been on council served as deputyreeve reeve and 1966 warden of county He has been on the board of governors of Sheridan college since its inception and is on the board of directors of the Ontario Crafts Foundation He Is vice- president of the Acton Agricultural Society and a member of the assessment review court of Ontario In the last couple of years I seem to have become oriented toward education Mr Hinton says let my name stand because I feel very strongly that education is vital these days but there are questions to be asked and answered concerning educational costs feel it is a concern to the taxpayers that the government has increased its subsidy for education to per cent of the total cost and anticipate going to GO per cent in the future yet the contribution by the taxpayers continues to climb The Halton county board Is accountable to the ratepayers for these increases some of which I feel are unjustified Seek mayors chair Leslie Duby Mayor Leslie A is running for the top office In Acton again with a record of eight years as mayor and 11 years of council work behind him with his wife Alice He has two children the Rev Laurence A rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd St Catharines and a daughter Mrs M Peterson who lives at Werner Lake Ontario where her husband is principal at the Mines School A veteran of the is senior lay reader and a choir member church for 32years2SofthemBsaproductiontnachlneoperator For the past seven years he has been personnel and safety with the company was active in sports in his younger years ploying OHA hockey In and Acton but he Is widely known for his Interest in music Dubbed Acton singing mayor he possesses a fine voice which he uses inald of local and charitable events In many places He Is fond of outdoors and likes nothing better than enjoying his cottage in Muskoka Making a bid for another two years as mayor this veteran councillor says My main concern at this time is that the housing for the senior citizens Is still not complete Due to objections hearings applications for etc there have been repeated delays quite beyond the control of council All requirements under the Planning Act have been met and work should now proceed There are those who say we are not planning for the future This Is ridiculous We have a planning board planning consultant and of plan and zoning regulations as required By the Planning Act The problem has been the necessity of obtaining approval from Queens Park and the Ontario Municipal Board before any local endeavor can be undertaken The apparent slowness In receiving official approval has been frustrating but we must realize these departments are dealing with many request from other municipalities at the same time We have a concept plan for our town which of course can only be used as a guide We must be flexible to the growth demands as we face them one by one Development will produce many problems but a sound council of dulyelectedoffleialscanandwillcopewith them RH Bob Drlnkwalter Making his second try for the office of mayor in the town of Acton is H Bob with a fine record of public service In the years he has lived here Bob lives with his wife Val and four children at 160 Churchill and is employed In Georgetown with Standard Products as Quality Control Manager During tour years on council he served as chairman of roads and sewers and as a member of the budget committee He also served on planning board for six years two of them as chairman Bob has also been active on the minor sports executive on the board of directors of Acton Community Credit Union on the board of directors of the Acton Curling Club on the Home and School executive as well as the Acton Development Commission Asked why he chose to run again for the mayor office Bob replies he feels the political atmosphere has changed since his lost bid for election and asks voters at the present administrations record especially the mayors He sees the senior citizens home still a dream despite promises in 196a of an early start Industrial activity despite the promise of an Intensive search for new industries he sees as still Insignificant and cites the near revolution with the Chamber of Commerce over the failure of council to think about the derelict industrial site Bob sees a significant failure In the cooperation between appointed committees owing to councils Inability to see the problems and In of committee suggestions and recommendations We witness incidents such as the arena fiasco the airy Lake dredging comedy and mass resignations from both parks and recreation and planning and adjustment committees I could continue mentioning the condition of our roads and sidewalks the delays in postponement of necessary projects- reduction of taxes A political Joke which will backfire He sees this as a direct reflection on the mayor My belief Is the mayor must give leadership and direction not only to his council and committees but also to his people he says and feels that if he is elected he can provide the leadership and work hard towards bringing limited goals to a successful conclusion in the shortest possible time THE PARKING lot beside the Anglican church was levelled and gravelled by town workmen the past week DURING THE past week Milton OPP Investigated oc currences laid 19 charges against motorists and issued warnings to drivers NEED ODD Jobs done Theres help for you in the High School News column on the youth page THE CHRISTMAS lights are on each night now on the main streets Vote to elect Deputyreeve challenged Tyler McKenzle TED Mr and Mrs Tyler and two young daughters live on Peel St he with Tyler Transport He has been on council four years and In acclaimed deputy reeve He has been chairman of Acton water and sewer committee and on county council serves on the property and office administration committee the social and family services committee and the Childrens Aid fhe water supply for the town Acton Is serious business at the present time Although this year council has looped Its main water trunk line with an ad Inch main on Churchill ltd so It Is virtually impossible to be without water as we were this year when the main inch trunk broke we still need additional water before the town can expand with additional subdivisions If capped well on the fourth line cannot be made potable we must search for additional water new sewage plant is capable of looking after approximately people It took us four years to plan and build the last one We should engage engineer this coming year to prepare preliminary drawings for an addition to the sewage plant so when we do expand which is inevitable with the four or five subdivisions knocking at our door wo can shorten the planning and consturction time of the plant With this knowledge and information feel that our biggest problem is not looking for additional growth but controlling our expansion with good sub division agreements to protect not only the people who are presently paying taxes in Acton but the future citizens and ratepayers of Acton I believe that services that everybody uses should be paid for out of the general tax rate and not through the local improvement garnet Mckenzie Robert Little school principal Pat lives on Jeffrey Ave with his wife Mary and daughter Kathy a teacher at the M Z Bennett school Hi has been on council for the past four years and makes his bid to step up to the position of deputy reeve Comments Mr McKenzle we established our home in Acton in our lives have centred around people and system We should continue the existing street lighting program and the new sidewalk program implemented this year still places in town where taxes have been paid on property tor JO mid years where they do not have sidewalks and only 100 wait bulbs for street lighting At the level I feel thot Alton with its good industrial residential assessment factors should remain a strong viable unit in the regional government plan and only good strong representation will permit this properly and office ad ministration committee of which i a member is starting to Consolidate all the various county unils under one roof in each community which In the very near future should reduce our rental maintenance and personnel overhead flic newly formed social and services committee of which I also a member with no precedent to follow are extending services to the north of the county which were only available In Oakville and until this year foregoing ore not election promises policies and programs I will continue to support and participate In and respectfully ask your continued support by voting for me as your deputy reeve in the coming election budget town planning and personell committees As your deputy reeve I would be willing to serve Acton using my knowledge of our town my Interest in education School pleasant and rewarding I sports church In Canada and in thi3 province Hon Irwin Haskett Ontario a Minister of Transport said We have proposed in our arguments to the Commission that the idea of a minimum passenger train network be considered this province to ensure the most efficient integrated network for meeting passengers needs ine proposal was in the arguments filed with the Commission on November 14 objecting to the rationalization plan put forward by Canadian Pacific to cut down the size of trains on the Canadian transcontinental service to reduce winter service and to up fares We are prepared to accept a network that more closely reflects the market demand However there are in Ontario some passenger railway services that have not been rejected by the market but are simply over capitalized There are other services that have not met the market demand and require adjustments in schedules or quality of service There are also services that will eventually satisfy future special demands Mr has issued invitations to the Federal Minister of Transport and to the presidents of the two major railway lines to discuss this proposed minimum passenger train network further at a meeting to be held in Toronto Open public fishing area Southern Ontario trout and their families received a present from the department of lands and forests with the announcement 189 acres of land about miles from Acton
