Books not behind soys former clerk Deputy Reeve Gordon Agnew was slammed at Tuesday night s meeting of council for stating the township bookkeeping system was in a hell of a state of affairs He was accused of making the statement for political gain Reeve Anne MacArthur reported she had been bothered by a definite harrassment about the statement and found the books very neat and orderly when she checked them the following Monday Former Clerktreasurer J C defended himself for the first time at the meeting I think It was a cowardly cusatlon and that you give a damn either he said to the deputyreeve I ve tried to work out a balanced budget for the last five years and I would I ve been pretty damned successful at doing ft I tried making the best use of the staff without taking on any extra help to sit around and do nothing when times were slack he said Books not behind And I thought I was doing a reasonably good and satisfying Job The books were not six months behind cheques were all balanced posting was up to date and daily entries and order collections were all recorded Mr Mclntyre also stated he would turn in ills resignation from the industrial committee and questioned Mr Agnew ability as far as examining the books was concerned There are busy times in every office he I know I was working a hour day If work got heavy we were quite happy to stay later or work on a Saturday or Sunday Reeve A made known that bookkeeper Mrs V Cochram said It was literally impossible to be six months behind in the books as stated by the deputyreeve Some things can only be entered in an account maybe once a year said Mrs Cochram She then gave an example from an entry in the township books and agreed the statement made by Mr was far from being correct Deputy Reeve stated he was not seeking political gain when he made the statement a week ago I have been in in municipal affairs since I was a kid If I don think something is right I bring it out into the open not for pussyfooting around or sweeping an incident under the rug he said I looked at the books proximately two weeks ago and found them behind understood everything was to be up to date when the old went out and the new came in Mlsl din sta te ent Councillor Jim Watson agreed the statement had misled everyone Councillor Art Gibson admitted he was also asked by numerous people just how bad a state the books were really In Councillor Allan sold he knew Mr Mclntyre was trying to save money on the budget by not hiring extra help He also asked if there was no money just how up to date the books really were Mr Mclntyre said he felt convinced Mr Agnew knew nothing about municipal books and that the discussion had turned into a private between the two He charged the deputyreeve to prove his Mr linoi statement was that he felt it was the clerk treasurer responsibility to keep the books up to date as part of his Job The reeve said she had been advised the auditors would be making their next audit
