we receive many calls regarding disfigurations on the leaves of Maple There are several mites that attack silver and sugar maple The two main species are the Maple Bladder Gall Mite and the Maple Spindle Gall Mite Tress that arc attacked by these mites are not usually seriously damaged although the young leaves can be seriously distorted with heavy Infestations The mites spend the winter at the base of the bud In the spring they crawl to the opening leaves where they on the surface Their feeding causes the leaf to form Irregular growths which enclose the mites galls are green turning to red or black In the fall the mites leave the gall and go to the base of the buds for winter These mites can be controlled by spraying with a dormant oil emulsion in early spring or with malathion in late spring At this time of year spraying is not too effective so the best plan of attack is to prepare for next spring where infestations have been very heavy was at camp as a Junior and was awarded
