The Acton Press Wednesday February 1970 Duke of Devonshire chapter presents 53rd annual report The following is the 53rd annual report of the Duke of Devonshire Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire Acton During the year there were nine regular meetings held al the home of members and one at the Resource centre at Robert Little school The membership is Three executive meetings were Aid Decoration Day Committee and Canadian Legion Donations to National Headquarters were to Provincial Lucy Morrison Korean Projects Travel and Exchange National Shipping Commonwealth Relations and Peace Garden Funds Money making projects tag day at local fall fair used for educational purposes and a bake sale In April a Tree of Life tea was held at Manor Waterloo where one of our members Miss M Z Bennett resides Several members ittended Mrs Young was at the Convention of the 1 O D at the Sheraton Con naught Hotel Hamilton Chapter members attended open house at Knox Presbyterian Church for Mrs M MacDonald a charier member in honor of her birthday The Regent Mrs E Lidkea had the honor of representing the Duke of Devonshire chapter of the 1 0 D E at the marquee where Lieutenant Governor MacDonald of Ontario received on Acton Fall Fair day In December Mrs W was hostess to the chapter for a Christmas dinner Exchange of gifts and carol singing ended a pleasant evening In closing we extend greetings to Provincial chapter of the I OD on he event of their 50th anniversary in 1970 Regent Mrs Secretary Mrs Jean Johnston Pancakes pave way to ROBERT LITTLE GRADE students hosted a pancake supper at the school last Tuesday night to raise money for a class tr to Quebec later this year J Krspek end Holmes acted as chefs and Mary Laugh I en worked as a waitress Primary student Acton was the former Myrtle She received her education here prior to moving to Toronto where she has lived for the past years Married August 1926 to Frank J Browning the couple lived at 140 Lamb Ave Mr Browning survives her Two brothers and three sisters predeceased her Park Dills Etta Maude Workman Blanche MacPherson and Arlof Dills all children of George and Sarah Mrs Browning was the aunt of Mrs Dorothy Cor leu Eugene MacPhcrson Mrs Frances and David and James Ddls The funeral service was held from the Trull Funeral Home Ave Toronto on February with interment at Cemetery Acton Rev Perkins Rev A conducted the funeral service and interment was in cemetery Pallbearers were great nephews Bob Watson David Watson Ross McLean Stanley Douglas McDonald and Tom Bielby A retired druggist he is survived by one sister Myrtle Mrs G H Bielby Niagara Falls He was predeceased by wives and Lena brothers R Perry Watson Acton and Shirley Watson Son of Mary and Robert Watson he was born in township August 15 1888 He moved to years ago after years in Georgetown He was a member of the Georgetown masonic lodge Council honors John Milne John Milne a member of the Halton County Museum Board since its inauguration is retiring from the board and was honored by County Council Friday for his years of service Making the presentation to Mi Milne who was a former warden of County was another former warden George Currrc who is currently serving on County Council as Reeve of John has given good useful and faithful service to the board said Mr as he presented a gift to Mi Milne The monthly meeting of Dublin Women s Institute was held on Thursday evening at the home of Mrs C Blue Springs Road There were people present including four 4 H girls Opening exercises were presided over by Mrs M Hope Chest Mrs William Frank exhibited a quilt that had been completed recently by some of the ladies A financial report of a successful euchre and bake sale in Hall Acton on Feb 12 was given A report of the visiting committee was given by Mrs W Mclntyre and Mrs mentioning visits and remembrances made to sick and shut ins Mrs N Douglas introduced the four girls Misses Cathy Cathy Hinton Laurent and Bonnie Armstrong with their leaders Mrs F McCairon and Mrs W Lasby The club is called the Dublin Meaty Maids and there are ten girls taking the course Cathy Lasby gave a talk on What the 4H pledge means to me and Cathy Hinton spoke on Three Ways to use a Roast of Beef Laurenc Rennick gave some accordion numbers Each of the girls made a splendid contribution with their respective numbers and the ladies feel that the clubs they are sponsoring are well worth while and are giving the gull a real workable knowledge into the waysofhomemaking Theresa McCarron who hopes to be a member presently pleased the ladies with guitar selections Much credit is due to the leaders Mrs and Mrs Lasby in giving valuable instruction to the girls As her talent number for the month Mis M Hunter gave a very amusing reading househunting and conducted a contest with Mrs I and Mrs C winners Acton Corp Ray Mason is convalescing at home now after being in hospital in Guelph for an operation On Saturday evening a group of about members of Trinity church Hi 9ers and their friends enjoyed the evening at Rossi a sleigh riding skating and They went afterward to the home of their leader Mrs Long for refreshments Last Thursday was held in Erin dale United church attended by over 200 representatives of district United churches There from Acton United were Mrs G W McKenziC Mrs L and Mrs L Mrs McKenzie was installed as Community Friendship and Visiting secretary Mrs Charles Mason spent Sunday In London visiting her sister Mrs Walters Monsieur J Marc Morm was the guest of Ian al the Squirery the country home in Rockwood M J Monn who is the Southern Ontar representative for the French Radio network expressed his delight in the lovely countryside and was driven home feeling quite refreshed after the relaxing parades Remembrance Day and Decoration Day Our sick were remembered with cards and flowers Through the enthusiasm and efforts of the Services at Home and Abroad committee the members- prepared a bale of articles including 14 quilts Pocket books were shipped to armed services overseas As a member of the National Organization we donated to the following funds Commonwealth Relations Peace Garden Fund Korean Projects National Shipping Overseas Relief Fund helm ma Gorden Foundation our donations went to Travel and Exchange committee Canadian Scene Lucy Morrison Memorial Fund Special Representatives Fund and Services at Home and Abroad Pot luck suppers proved very successful one with an international theme and our annual Christmas meeting In January we had an oriental meal to set the mood for slides shown by Velma West of her recent trip to beautiful Hawaii At other meetings we enjoyed slides and a most enlightening talk by Mr and Mrs Fountain on the Bruce Trail Mr and Mrs Paul Mart in dale high school teachers who chaperoned a group of students through Europe showed slides taken in Austria Member Jessie Coles shared her trip through England last summer by showing her slides As well we had an evening i enjoyment from the Carol Wharton dancers A float was entered in the Fall Fair parade with emphasis on education At well the Chapter had a booth in the fair building displaying work of the member including quilts and knitting and I ODE pamphlets were distributed Members feel that 1969 was a year of good fellowship and satisfying accomplishment We express our appreciation to our Regent Mrs Mary for her leadership and to all members who worked enthusiastically for the chapter aims in community and abroad Regent Mrs Mary Secretary Mrs Elizabeth
