There are three objefts which Amer¬ ican ftatefmen fhould have conftantly before their eyes, which they fhould fteadily advance upon, and never abandon, until they are fully accompliihed. They are— I. The acquifition of Cuba. The pofTcflion of that ifland is neceflary to the republic—to maintain the union of the weftem and the Atlantic dates—to protect the commerce of the valley of the MifEffippi—to command that of Mexico— and to furnifh coffee to the republic. i. The independence of Mexico. The independence of that empire would give it a free trade. A free trade would threw its commerce, and the gold and filver of three hundred and twelve mines into the bofom of the republic; The gold 2nd filver of thtfe mines would make a bafis for a paper currency ; would relieve the preffurc for money ; would enable the republic to put into action all i:s faculties for war or commerce, and would make it the mod powerful nation upon the gtfrbe. j.
