Wednesday, April 11, 2007 · Page 15 Holy Name Hawk Happenings The entire Holy Name School community would like to extend 'best wishes' to a very special staff member, Miss Evon. Thursday, April 5th signaled the end of her assignment at HNS. With us since September, Miss Evon had the opportunity to teach a wonderful group of Grade 2 students, all of whom will miss her dearly. As we say 'goodbye' to Miss Evon and thank her for her time, patience, and contributions that have made an impact on our school, we also welcome back Mrs. Matthews, returning from her maternity leave on April 10. A great group of Grade 2's will be awaiting her arrival and the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with her. Best of luck to both of these teachers for an exciting third term! Last Thursday, staff and students were treated to a presentation of the 'Stations of the Cross', organized and presented by the Grade 8 students of HNS, under the guidance of their FSL teachers. These talented students used their knowledge of the Dramatic Arts and 'tableau' or 'frozen movement' to reenact the final journey of Jesus Christ. Members of the viewing audience were treated to a presentation in both English and French that recreated the final days and moments in the earthly life of Jesus. Many thanks to the Grade 8 students and their teachers for their efforts and a wonderful and faithful performance! In classroom news ... Students in JKB and JKM have been busy preparing for the celebration of Easter by creating special promises to Jesus. Student promises included: helping to clean up their rooms, tidying up their toys, playing nicely with a brother and/or sister, helping to clear the dinner MAPLEWOOD MAKES MUSIC! On Wednesday, April 4 and Thursday, April 5 Maplewood's Stage Band and Concert Band participated in MusicFest, a regional music festival featuring bands from schools in Windsor and Essex County. The students, under the direction of Mr. Hencher, have been practising diligently and this was a great opportunity to show off their abilities. They also got to listen to what's happening musically in other schools. From left, Jake M., Tabitha G., Tessa B. and Tiffani G. pose with their instruments before a recent morning practice. Maplewood Tiger Tales Spring fundraiser BY table, etc. The JK students have also been working to create an Easter booklet. Students have also participated in various readings about 'The First Easter' and 'God's Miracle'. JK students could also be seen scouring the halls of HNS in search of a particular 'furry' creature ... Students became suspicious when they discovered that their classrooms had been littered with many yummy chocolate eggs! Students uncovered these hidden goodies in their toys, on their chairs, and in various other areas of the room. The JK's guessed that the Easter Bunny had made a special stop and visited their classrooms! Many had hoped to get a quick glimpse of this lovely creature but, as always, the Easter Bunny came and went unseen, leaving traces of the 'Easter Spirit' (and chocolate treats!) behind. NICOLE NANTAIS It's that time of year again, time for spring fundraising! The Maplewood School Council is organizing a Read-a-thon to be held on April 12. The purpose of the Read-a-thon is to celebrate literacy, one of our main priorities at Maplewood School. It will be a time for students to enjoy the pleasure of a good book being read to them or reading for themselves. We will have surprise guest speakers reading stories to different grades and mystery readers over the P.A. system. Students will be required to do some silent reading throughout the morning. The Read-a-thon will take place during the first four periods of our school day. Pyjamas, slippers and just plain comfortable clothing may be worn at this time. Many students will be bringing blankets, pillows and cuddling their stuffed animals to keep cozy while enjoying their books. We all hope this event will reinforce reading and liter- acy at our school! Profits from the Read-athon will go toward supporting several programs including house teams, sports and music equipment for everyone to use. Pledge sheets have been handed out to every student in our school. We have asked the students NOT to go door to door for donations for safety reasons. Pledges can be sought from family, friends and close neighbours. All students have been reminded about this issue. All pledge sheets must be returned, even if no pledges are collected. The goal of this fundraiser is to earn $5,000. Maplewood is even offering some fun incentives! For each $20 in pledges a student brings in, they will receive a ticket for a draw of several prizes. If we raise $2,500, all students will receive three extralong recesses. If $4,000 is raised, a student/staff basketball game will be held. If our entire goal is reached, the top seller in each class will get to throw a pie at any teacher of their choice! Some of the staff will also get an "extreme makeover". We hope to see some wild new do's! Our overall top seller will get a $100 gift card for Devonshire Mall. So come on Maplewood - let's get those pledges! Go Tigers! CAT Testing BY Sun Parlour Junior School News VICKI VAN GENT It's that time of year again for grade seven students across Ontario. CAT testing is back! Every year, all grade seven students in Ontario write the Canadian Achievement Test. This is an all multiple choice test that examines what students have learned in previous years as well as grade seven. The test also helps to identify areas that might need more review or focus. The test does not count toward class marks for the students. CAT tests are in math, language, vocabulary and spelling. All tests are timed. Teachers are given two weeks to give all tests. Tips from the teachers are: Always read the question carefully, take your time and, when all else fails, take an educated guess. Go Tigers! Last Friday was "Silly Tie Day" at Sun Parlor Junior School. Pictured here are Mrs. Becken and friends with some of our silly ties. In the words of Charlie, "There's always something fun going on around here!" Truer words were never spoken. 169 IRWIN AVE. · Family Owned and Operated · Senior Discounts 16 Years+ · Free Estimates Experience · 24 Hour Service · Fully Insured CALL NOW AND WE WILL MATCH OR BEAT ANY QUOTE.
