They are all important parts of putting together a great Science Fair project! Over the past few weeks, students in grades seven and eight at Maplewood Public School have been constructing Science Fair projects. Topics are varied and include subjects such as bacteria, popcorn, rust and accurate weather stations. The students will bring in their projects on the morning of Monday, arch 5. An Internet Danger Cafe ill be held for parents and uardians at our school at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 16. There are many Internet dangers that our students are susceptible to on a daily basis. School computers will be on for parents to see what their children are viewing and doing on the Internet. The school council thinks it is important to be informed so we can protect our students. Please call the school to register for this session. Maplewood staff would like to thank the school council for the wonderful luncheon they served last week in honour of "Teacher Appreciation Week". The pasta, salad, beverages and dessert were delicious! The staff appreciates all the effort that went into this terrific treat. Maplewood Sports BY NICOLE J. NANTAIS Both the senior girls' and boys' basketball teams are working hard toward their goal of winning the Pronger tournament. Recently, both teams participated in the Red Raider Rebound hosted by Essex High School. The senior boys played with all their hearts but fell short in the championship game against Maidstone Public School with a score of 55 to 52. They earned the finalist pennant and silver medals. Well done! We know they will keep striving to be the best that they can be. The senior girls' basketball team played on Feb. 10 at the Red Raider tournament. They made it to the consolation match but were defeated by an extremely skilled team from Jack Miner. The team placed fourth in the tournament. Coaches, Mr. Archer, Mr. Spagnuolo and head coach, Mrs. Murray are very proud of the girls' enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The girls played hard all day. Great job for both teams! Maplewood senior girls played their first Pronger match on Feb. 27 at Amherstburg Public School against the LaSalle Storm. While it wasn't the best game they had played, it motivated them to work even harder to win their next Pronger game against Maidstone Central School News Last Wednesday night the senior boys basketball team began their county playoffs. They started the night playing a very large Centennial Central team. Our Eagles pressed hard and were able to overcome them in the end. Their second game was against Mount Carmel/Blythes-wood. This time our Eagles were stronger and walked away with an easy victory. Great work gentlemen. This Thursday, Maidstone is having a Waste Free Lunch Day. Students will bring their lunch in reusable containers and this will help us all become aware of just how much garbage each household and a school can generate in a day. This Friday we'll be welcoming Constable Trudell back to the school for the Gr. 6 V.I.P. class. The students are enjoying this program, as they learn about their own values and what influences them. We will be celebrating Carnaval this Friday as well. Students are eagerly preparing for this fun afternoon of games, activities, treats and `chocolat chaud'. Finally, we wish Miss Elliott all the best as she slips back into retirement. As principal, she's been a wonderful addition to our Maidstone Central family for the last three months and she'll be missed. We also welcome back Mrs. Ramcharan as she returns after the March Break. Everyone have a safe and happy March Break. March Break at the Children's Safety Village During March Break March 12 to 16 children from seven to 10 years old can participate in a daily morning program at the Children's Safety Village located on the corner of Lauzon Parkway and Forest Glade Drive. The boys' team won their match with a score of 34 to 30. Once again, 3-on-3 basketball has begun at our school. It is organized by Mrs. Murray and gives students in grades 3 to 6 the chance to have some fun and improve their skills. The teams are divided by grade and into boys and girls teams. This way everybody gets equal playing time and ball handling. Many people have put a lot of time and dedication into making this opportunity available to our students. Mrs. Murray should be given a lot of credit for all her efforts in this area! Thank you. The next sport to look forward to at Maplewood is badminton. Skills and techniques are being practised in phys. ed. classes. Maplewood coaches are hoping for a strong, skilled team this year. Try-outs will be held soon. Look for more Maplewood sports updates in further issues. Go Tigers Go!
