Wednesday, March 7, 2007 · Page 14 Maple Syrup Festival AUTOGRAPH PLEASE! Windsor Spitfires top scorer Keaton Turkiewicz stopped by Holy Name School last week to sign autographs for students, including Grade 4 students Reilly Byrne, left, and Chelsea Kobelsky (centre). The rightwinger's visit was also to promote the "Adopt-aSchool" program for the OHL team sponsored by the Essex Walk-In Clinic. A draw for students to win four Spitfires tickets is part of the program. Holy Name Hawk Happenings Feb. 27 was an exciting day for two 'chess-masters' from HNS. Anthony T. (Grade 6) and Joshua M. (Grade 5) participated in the Canadian Chess Challenge at the Ciociaro Club in Windsor. These students displayed outstanding performances throughout the competition. Joshua played skillfully and was victorious in all eight of his matches. He will be participating in the Chess Challenge Championship on Saturday, March 24. Anthony also played quite skillfully, taking five of his eight matches -- a job well done for a student in his first year of playing chess! HNS is proud of you both! taff and students would lso like to wish Joshua the est of luck in the champinship round of this competition. Keep up the great work! Staff and students gathered on Feb. 28 in the school gymnasium to honour the achievements of various students for the month of February. February's Student of the Month assembly began with a `Read-A-Thon' recap and reminder that our annual Read-A-Thon event would be held later in the week. Students were reminded of the various award/incentive levels and the entertaining rewards that would be achieved at each level. We hope Mr. Lozinsky, our school principal, enjoys pies, because he just may be splashed and smothered with a couple when students reach their goal of $15,000! The theme for `student of the month' for the month of February was "Caring". Two deserving students from each class were chosen for their outstanding exhibition of this month's theme. Honoured students received certificates of recognition (and encouragement from their fellow peers) as they proudly displayed their awards `frontand-centre' at the assembly. Students were also treated to a wonderful surprise at the assembly some well-received guest speakers! Thanks to the sponsorship of Dr. Koutras from the Essex Walk-In Clinic, students at HNS have been able to participate in a weekly (at times, biweekly) draw for Windsor Spitfires tickets. Many families have had the opportunity to view some exciting Spitfire hockey and, on this day, students were able to meet one of the players often seen in action playing for the Spitfires, Keaton Turkiewicz, as well as the team's coach. In classroom news ... Congratulations to the students of Grade 6MAR and 6MAS, who have recently achieved an outstanding goal. The students in these classes have received the 'Scholastic Book Club Award' an honour bestowed on classes for reading over 100 books. Students in 6MAR are approaching 300 novels read this year! These students have also generously donated over 200 books to needy children across Canada. Keep up the good work! Did you know that the John R. Park Homestead Conservation Area is the only place in Essex County that you can see the maple trees tapped, the sap evaporating and maple syrup being made in the pioneer way? Many special events are planned so that the public can participate in this exciting spring ritual and school and group maple programs are available anytime by advance appointment. Kick off March Break with Essex County's only maple syrup festival on Sun. March 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Costumed guides will be boiling the sap down in an iron cauldron, finishing the syrup in the 1850's kitchen and making maple taffy on the snow. Staff will be on hand to answer your questions about maple trees and "Science of Maple" sessions will be offered featuring a film and exhibit. Children can participate through various hands-on activities; get up close and see the trees tapped, try the brace and bit, carry pails of sap using an old-fashioned yoke and make a maple craft to take home. Pure maple syrup, butter and sugar will be for sale in the Homestead gift shop, so take home a tasty treat. Don't forget to dress warmly and to wear boots. More maple fun will follow through the March Break! Attend one of the "Maple March Break for Families" Programs on Tues. March 13 and repeated again on Fri. March 16 at 1:30 p.m. sharp.
