Wednesday, March 7, 2007 · Page 12 Who Killed Rock N. Roley? BY SUSAN TUCK SWEETMAN The curtain went up last Friday on the spring production of Who Killed Rock N. Roley at the Essex United Church Dinner Theatre. It was the 5th anniversary of the class of 1954 when the famous Rock N. Roley was killed at a rail- way crossing in the same manner as Becky Sue met her death five years earlier after the homecoming dance. Rock was loved by his fans but not his friends. His friends had their own secrets (including a secret FBI agent, a secret marriage, a large inheritance, thrown football games, and even assuming Rock's identity during concerts). All admitted to killing Rock for their own reasons. But the murderer was Ca (wonderfully played by Karen Arnold), who did it for a very simple reason: He loved Becky Sue and Rock was driving the car that killed her! The production's twonight run closed Saturday night to a sold out house. The Brampton Salvation Army youth choir perform in Essex Saturday night. Salvation Army youth band plays to packed crowd BY DANIEL SCHWAB The sound of horns, cornets, drums and guitar filled the Essex Salvation Army Church Saturday night, as an audience was treated to three separate performances by a group of young and talented musicians. The Brampton Salvation Army Young People's Band, Choir and Junior Worship Team played through a variety of traditional and contemporary Christian songs throughout the evening. Essex Salvation Army Mjr. Paul Gilbert introduced the group of players, who were mostly under the age of 16. "It's really good to see kids involved with music," Gilbert said before the show. The band sent Gilbert an e-mail last year asking if they could play in the venue. leaders Chris Band Bridges and Danielle Watson, who've been involved in the Salvation Army for most of their lives, said they weren't sure what to expect with playing a show so far away from home. "I just said, `whatever happens, happens,'" Bridges said, pleasantly surprised with the near sell-out crowd in attendance. Bridges, 22, took direction of the band four years ago. "The Brampton Salvation Army Young People's Band has been around for about 100 years," he said. "It went away for a while, and then I started it up again and we've been going ever since." The band played half a dozen songs Saturday night and a few during the Sunday morning church service. Along with conducting, Bridges played piano during the choir's performances. He said the group played a concert with the Salvation Army Members of the spring production of Who Killed Rock N. "They're pretty confident," he said of the 17 band members. The Junior Worship Team, led by Watson, played contemporary Christian music with a smaller group of instruments, including piano, guitar, drums and vocals. "We usually give the audience the opportunity to join in and sing with us," she said. The team practises for an hour every week, with members learning their parts individually and then bringing them together to play with the group as a whole. For Watson, support from the Brampton Salvation Army Church is a great help for the young musicians. "I think there are a lot of great people in our church," she said. "Everybody there is really supportive. It's like a family away from your family." Guardian E SSEX 169 IRWIN AVE. ATM PHARMACIES LTD.
