Wednesday, February 28, 2007 · Page 11 Retirees Social Club to host `How To Week' The Essex Retirees' Social Club is inviting seniors to a free week of activities at its Russell Street location from March 12-16. A wide range of games and activities will be offered, including carpet bowling, bingo, bridge, shuffleboard, cribbage, Scrabble, Tai Chi and quilting. "It's for people to come out and try things they wouldn't normally do," said Essex Retirees' Social Club staff member Betty Lou Frith. "If they felt awkward about coming in, they may be more inclined to participate if they saw other people joining in too." The "How to Week" was organized by Essex Retirees' Social Club staff member Michelle Mitchell. All older adults are welcomed. The week begins with a 9 a.m. exercise session on March 12 and ends with a 1:30 pm. choir performance on March 16. March Break Art Camp Mad Science offers Brian Sweet, organizer of the Wandering Writers Group, congratulates author Henrietta O'Neill at the Kingsville Train Station following her presentation last week. O'Neill stressed that getting a book published requires time, funding, patience, persistence and a bit of luck. Her books are available at the Nature Nook Book Store at Point Pelee or online at amazon.ca Point Pelee revisited BY BILL GAY Author Henrietta O'Neill has a passion for Point Pelee National Park. In 2000, O'Neill wrote "In Search of a Heart", a history commissioned by the Friends of Point Pelee. A limited number of books were printed but this well written history of Canada's most southerly point on the mainland is still available at stores in the Point Pelee area. In "In Search of a Heart", O'Neill weaves the early days of the area flawlessly with information gained through extensive interviews and secondary sources. Last November, O'Neill's newest work "Birding at Point Pelee, a Birder's History of one of Canada's Most Famous Birding Spots" was published. The new book is the story of a century of change in extreme southern Essex County. With the May birding season just around the corner, O'Neill's latest effort is a must-read for serious and casual birders alike. The Leamington Arts Centre is hosting March Break Art Camp with Katherine Burton. Burton, owner of Art Works and daughter of wellknown Essex County artist Harold Burton, has taught art at United Mennonite Education Institute and offers private lessons. During March Break Art Camp, Burton will offer a program featuring challenging and exciting projects for ages 5 to 13. The camp runs from March 12 to 16 with ages 5 to 8 attending from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and ages 9 to 13 attending from 2 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 519-324-7393 or email Katherine@artworksisfun.com.
