Rick Derus and Essex County OPP, presented Joe Colasanti with an award for his generosity over the years. The award, a beautiful photograph of an OPP cruiser, was purchased by the Essex County OPP "COPPS for Charity" fund. Joe Colasanti has sponsored many sports events with the Essex County OPP Athletic league over the years. He has donated his facility for numerous charity events and Christmas parties. The Colasanti family has donated food for various fundraising events. Joe Colasanti has been and continues to be a vital supporter of Crime Stoppers. Tree planting and care workshop As the weather starts to warm up, people will start to think about planting and post-planting care for their trees. The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) will host a tree planting and care workshop on Tuesday, March 6, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Essex Civic and Education Centre, 360 Fairview Avenue in Essex. Paul Giroux, ERCA's Registered Professional Forester, will focus on replanting trees and restoring your property after it has been victimized by the Emerald Ash Borer. He will also discuss planting practices for trees in this region, as well as soils and species selection. There will be opportunities for workshop participants to ask other tree related questions, and if desired, trees may be ordered at the workshop. The order deadline is Friday, March 9, and while there are many varieties of seedlings and large stock native trees available, quantities of some trees species are limited, so place your order soon. This workshop is offered free of charge to the residents of the region, but preregistration is recommended by calling 776-5209 ext. 377 or by email to pgiroux@erca.org. Claw back of OAS If you're a senior citizen and your 2006 net income exceeds $62,144, you will lose all or part of your Old Age Security (OAS). You will also begin to lose your income tax age credit at the federal level if your net income exceeds $30,270. For Ontario, the amount is $30,448. Chartered Accountant Jeff Nightingale, Partner, Lipton Wiseman Altbaum & Partners LLP in Toronto, says there are strategies available to keep some of this money. "With careful planning, you may not have to hand over this money to the government. If you are facing these financial issues, you should sit down with your Chartered Accountant to discuss the options available that will allow you to continue to benefit from your OAS and wisely manage your 2006 personal income."
