Pelee Theatre kicks off new season BY BILL GAY Opening night is always an exciting milepost in the theatre season, and last Saturday was no exception with the inaugural performance of Out Here on the Flight Path at the Pelee Days Inn Dinner Theatre. Written by Canadian playwright Norm Foster, the play details the adventures of John Cummings, played by Scott Andrews, recovering from his recent divorce on his apartment balcony as the jets thunder overhead. Set in three vignettes, John meets three very different women who come to live in the next apartment. In an hilarious sequence, Faye, Angel and then Gwen (played by Sara-Clare Lajeunesse with the vivacity that befits a Norm Foster comedy), come to have an interesting impact on the life of our hero. Thus the stage is set for a classic comedy with commentary from the bitter divorcee who outlines the effect each woman has on his new life living alone. Out Here on the Flight Path continues at the Pelee Days Inn Feb. 3, 10 and 24, with a special Valentine's theme on Feb. 14 and 16. Dinner is at 6:30 followed by the performance. Citizens sought for international exchange team BY ANDY COMBER The Rotary Club is looking for citizens outside their membership to join an international exchange team, which will travel to Finland in 2008. "It is an amazing opportunity to come face to face with other people of the world," said Neil McBeth, an Essex Rotarian and chair of the organizing committee to establish a local exchange team. McBeth says the Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of the Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for non-Rotarian young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. A Rotarian will lead the team. For 2008, the selected team will spend four to five weeks in southwest Finland, experiencing its ways of life and observing their vocations as practiced abroad. "For example, a police officer on the team might go to the host country's police college and compare differences," said McBeth, who as a Rotarian has had experience leading teams. The team will also develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas, he said. For each team member, the Rotary Foundation covers the cost of the most economical round-trip air ticket between the home and host country. Local Rotarians in the host area provide meals, lodging and group travel within their district. Local individuals are being sought far in advance because of the preparation and the length of time the participants are away from their jobs and professions. Local team selections will be determined from applications made within Rotary District 6400, which represents 10 Rotary Clubs in Windsor and Essex County and 41 Rotary Clubs in southeast Michigan. Interested individuals should contact their local Rotary Club to see if they qualify and to pick applications, or call Neil McBeth at 519-776-5905. Applications should be delivered by August or early September of 2007.
