One is sure to meet old friends you only see once a year. But the attraction of all the new models and the hype and extravagance of the show itself is always fun. More importantly, you come away knowing just how important this particular industry is to our way of life. In Ontario, one of every seven jobs is related in one way or another to cars and trucks. The Detroit Auto Show first saw the light of day in 1907 with 17 companies hosting exhibits. Moving in 1965 to Cobo Hall, the NAIAS now boasts over 60 exhibitors, introducing 45 new models only at the 2007 Detroit show. The economic impact is heavy ­ about $550 million being pumped into the local economy. Over 800,000 are expected to attend the public showing. The NAIAS is growing so fast that organizers desire a commitment from the City of Detroit to expand Cobo Hall to accommodate more displays and attractions. One of the most important new models is a concept from GM, the Chevrolet Volt. Built on a platform called the E-flex system, the Volt is a battery-powered electric car that has a range of 40 city miles after a 6-hour charge from a standard household electrical outlet. This makes the Chevy concept ideal for those with a oneway commute of 20 miles or less. GM says that fits almost 78 percent of North American workers. The Volt also has a gasoline engine that extends the range up to 640 miles. The gas engine does not drive the wheels; instead, it creates the electricity that powers the wheels. The North American International Auto Show runs through January 21. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for the final day when the show closes at 7 p.m. The best choice for most Canadians would be to use Transit Windsor's shuttle service from the downtown depot. The bus company offers a package ticket that includes transportation both ways, plus admission to the show for $19 CDN. WSO and Classic Chorale perform "Bach Sings" The "Bach and Beyond" Baroque concert series continues Jan. 26 to Jan. 28 with performances of "Bach Sings". Music Director John Morris Russell conducts the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Windsor Classic Chorale in a program featuring cantatas and selections from Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B-Minor. Friday's concerts are at Assumption University Chapel at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening's concert is at 7:30 p.m. at Leamington United Mennonite Church.Sunday's performance is at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anne's Church, Tecumseh.
