We didn't have to travel far and the boys displayed some of their best hockey this year. On the 28th of December we faced Belle River AE who seemed to be firing on all cylinders and our boys were flat. The only bright spot of this game would be Alex Rawlins as Player of the Game for Essex. 5-0 Belle River. The next day the boys had two games to play against Tecumseh and Riverside. Our boys seemed to have gotten a good night sleep and played an aggressive hard checking game. Matthew McGuire scored in the first with assists going to Alec Shuttleworth and Awstin Pettit. Then in the second Skylar Janisse scored from Andrew Wellwood and Bobby McGowan. Essex went ahead in the last minute of the second when Brad Smith picked the corner from outside the blueline and Essex would hold on for a 3-2 victory. Assist going to Skylar Janisse. Luke McCarthy was terrific on defence. Great work ethic and heads up plays. We faced Riverside in the second game of the day and put together a complete game from goaltending to our finishing. Final 6-2 Essex. Goals and assists going to Matthew McGuire 1G 1A), Awstin Pettit (1G 1A), Alec Shuttleworth (1G 1A), Brad Smith (2G), Matthew Conley (2A), Andrew Wellwood (1G), Luke McCarthy (1A) and Skyler Janisse with two beautiful passing plays for two assists. Great game boys. After a 2-1 finish in round robin play, we again faced Riverside in the semi finals. This game was a little different with Riverside jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. Our boys showed a lot of heart and never let up. Andrew Wellwood made his presence known by knocking a few guys down and our AP player Alec Shuttleworth turned out to be the star of this game scoring a hat trick before the third period was under way. Skylar Janisse also scored assisted by Alec Shuttleworth. Awstin Pettit had two assists as did Bobby McGowan on the point. Essex held off a late attack in the third for the win 4-3 and a berth to the final. Again facing Belle River in the final and only two hours rest between games we were at their mercy and could not match their potent attacks. Belle River would finish the game 6-0 and win the tournament. Hats off to our boys for all the team work shown and to our goalies Alex Rawlins and Ryan Dickson for a lot of key saves in all our games. Enjoy the game boys.
