Nellis Construction / Carquest Acton Novice BB Tanners travelled to Milton for a tournament on December 27, 28 and 29 and took the conso- lation crown. The tournament consisted of 2 AA teams, a BB team (Ac- ton) and an AE team, so some of the games were not very close. The Tanners started the tour- nament against Milton AE, and beat them 7-1. Jesse Hill joined the team to make the start in goal, and played well. Mitchell Brake had two goals and an assist and was named game MVP. Next game was against Milton AA, with Mitchell Christopher returning to the Acton goal. Acton opened the scoring in the first, but could not hold Milton off, as Milton scored four goals of their own, including two on Tanner line changes, and ultimately beat the Tanners 4-2. Dylan Agnew scored a nice goal for Acton and was named game MVP. The Tanners completed the round robin against Flamborough, and lost 4-1. The Tanners opened the scoring on a goal by Mitchell Brake, who was named game MVP, but Flamborough came back with four of their own for the win. The days activities con- cluded with a skills competition, with seven events, none of them won by Acton players. All the Acton players worked hard, Ryan Dunlevy did well in the shoot-out, Greg Wells skated fast in the relay, and Gavin Ragan made the fi- nal of the chariot race. The tournament ended for the Tanners with the consola- tion final against Milton AE, whom the Tanners beat by a score of 13-0. Ryan Dunlevy had three goals and was named game MVP, Mitchell Brake had three goals and three assists. Defencemen Josh Tremblay and Scott Garvie each ex- ploded for a goal and three as- sists, the first goals of the season for each. Tremblays goal came on a breakaway with only 18 seconds left in the game. Gavin Ragan and Nicholas VanderEyken also each scored their first goals of the season, as the coach Bill Curry moved his defencemen up to play for- ward as the score built up. Overall scoring for the tour- nament: Mitchell Brake (6G, 5A), Holden Carachi (3G, 3A), Dylan Agnew (4G, 1A), Josh Tremblay (1G, 4A), Scott Garvie (1G, 4A), Ryan Dunlevy (3G, 1A), Gavin Ragan (1G, 3A), Walter Kirkness (1G, 3A), Jeff Curry (1G, 2A), Greg Wells (1G, 1A), Nicholas VanderEyken (1G, 1A). Eric Butson (2A), Brett Banks (2A), Tyler Christhopher (2A), Next home game is not until the playoffs start. Dennys Atom AE Tan- ners travelled to Grand Valley for a tournament on Friday, December 27, and came home with the win- ners trophies and the championship. The Tanners started the tournament against host Grand Valley, and beat their hapless hosts 10-0. Colton Wiens got the rare full game start in goal, and recorded the shut-out. The coach took the op- portunity to switch the line-up around, moving the defencemen up to play for- ward for the latter half of the game. Tyler Townsley recorded his first goal of the season, on a shot from the point while still play- ing defence. Next up was Mount For- est, and the Tanners handled them 5-0, this time Jesse Harris and Colton Wiens shared the shut-out. Scoring in the first two games was: Josh McDonell (2G, 3A), John White (3G, 1A), Jake Lewis (1G, 3A), Brandon Masini (2G, 1A), Jesse Spurrell (2G, 1A), Nathan Bennett (2G), Chris Chiasson (1G, 1A), Garrett Kri (1G, 1A), Tyler Townsley (1G, 1A), Jamie Campbell (2A), Roger Kirkness (2A), James Begg (1A) and Brandan Lockyer (1A). Their easy victories brought the Tanners to the final against Tavistock, a team they had played to a tough 2-2 tie at a previous tournament. It was another close, tough game, with no score until Tavistock scored on the power-play with only 11 seconds left in the second period. Acton finally tied it with seven minutes left in the third, as Nathan Bennett scored as- sisted by Josh McDonell. The Tanners took the lead a minute later as Jamie Campbell scored over the fallen Tavistock goalie, un- assisted, and Acton was six minutes from the champi- onship. Unfortunately Tavistock tied it with three minutes remaining, on a hard shot from long range down the right wing. Tavistock killed a penalty for the last two minutes of regulation, which brought on overtime for the cham- pionship. The teams played four skaters on four for one minute, then three on three. Goalie Jesse Harris, who played the full game, had to make several good saves as Tavistock broke in on goal. At two skaters on two, Jesse Spurrell and Josh McDonell gave up a breakaway, but Harris made the save, and Spurrell and McDonell broke back on Tavistock, making some nice passes before Spurrell finished it off with the winning goal to give the Tanners the tournament. Next home game for the Atoms is January 11 at 4:30.
