Novice A Drs Hager/Kniaziew The Novice `A' Ravens only had one game on the schedule this week as they entertained Tecumseh on Saturday night. The team welcomes Dylan Kimmerly who will round out the defence. As found in the last two meetings with Tecumseh, these two teams are evenly matched. At 6:10 of the first period Tecumseh forward broke in all alone on the Essex goal and Josh Scratch came up big with a nice save. The period ended in a scoreless tie. The second period was full of end-to-end action but at 6:24 Jared Fuerth went off with a tripping penalty and, with only 14 seconds left in the power play, Tecumseh scored to go up 1-0. Later in the second Brett Schmidt was given a two-minute minor for tripping but this time the Ravens' penalty killers were up to the challenge, stopping all Tecumseh attempts around strong netminding by Adam Amicarelli. The second period ended with the Ravens down 1-0. In the third, both teams picked it up a notch and at 6:24 the heat of the action sent Jake Watters and a Tecumseh player off with coincidental minors for roughing. The Ravens kept working hard and at the 3:45 mark of the third Brady Rickeard took a pass from Jared over the blue line, turned the Tecumseh defensemen inside out and went in to score the tying tally. (Congratulations to Brady who was not given credit for a nice goal in the Fort Erie Tournament.) The Ravens got one last chance with a powerplay late in the game but this one would end in a 1-1 tie. The team's progress will be tested in the coming week as they face both Chatham and Windsor. Midget Minor CCD The Ravens were looking to turn their fortunes around after two disappointing weekend tournaments and headed to LaSalle on Friday night to take on the Sabres. Derek Vivier opened the scoring at 7:32 with assists from Travis Hendricks and Robert Battersby. The Ravens would then open up the scoring in the following two minutes with Cory McDonnell and Jesse Breault each scoring to open up a 3-0 lead. Andrew Kozak would finish off the first period scoring with a nice feed from Derek Vivier. During the second period LaSalle and Essex would exchange goals with McDonnell getting his second of the game, with assists going to Andrew Kozak and Quinton Rossini. Showing their strong defensive play and steady goalkeeping from Amanda Wigfield, Essex headed into the third with a 5-1 lead. A combination of Doug Lambier, Kozak and Breault would combine for one more goal as LaSalle could sweeping. During the second day, each participant had an opportunity to work with these teaching skills, not only to the other participants, but the general public as well. Thanks to Tony Braithwaite for organizing this invaluable clinic. On Nov. 11 and 12, CCK hosted the Ontario Junior Curling Tour Cashspiel for junior curlers (less than 20 years of age). Eight men's teams and seven ladies' teams from across Ontario, including two men's teams from the Kingsville area, took part in the event. As well as all the leagues that are in full progress, every weekend is full of bonspiels or social events. Watch the ads in the newspaper for the upcoming social events. On Saturday, Oct. 28, Frank Willoughby and Deb Brousseau organized the annual "Swing and Sweep". This event usually consists of nine holes of golf at the Kingsville Golf Course and six ends of curling at the curling club. However, this year the golf course was far too wet, so the `swing' half of the day became a `shuffle', with a progressive euchre game. There were 12 teams entered. Everyone received a prize, and the overall winners were Tom and Linda Geiger, and Charlene and Matt McMahon. What a wonderful way to start off the curling season! Thanks to Deb and Frank for a job well done. The Curl Ontario Level 1 Coach/Instructor Course was held on Nov. 4 and 5. The eight participants spent the first day learning the skills of teaching curlers the technique of rock delivery and the ins and outs of only muster one final goal to give Essex a well earned 6-2 victory. Saturday night the Riverside Rangers visited the Essex Ravens, who were playing their second game in two nights. A steady and aggressive forecheck by Riverside stymied any chance of Essex mounting an attack in the Riverside zone thus ending the first period at 0-0. Key saves by Matt Lachine in the second would keep Riverside off the board until, for the second night in a row, Derek Vivier would open up the scoring to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead heading into the third. Excellent penalty killing for the Ravens during a five on three would pay off halfway through the third with Danny Vivier showing patience with the puck to set up Mitch Passa for the Ravens' second goal. Ben Bates would finish the game with an empty net goal and give Essex a 3-0 victory for the weekend sweep. NEW STIR IT UP (7-12yrs.)
