Goodfellows tally tops $40K CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 "It's amazing to see the four fire stations working together," said Bob Pulleyblank, chairman of the Goodfellows. The three Essex fire stations were joined this year by firefighters from the Sandwich South station. Pulleyblank has been involved with the charity for 30 years. He said a decision was made last year to create a local Goodfellows campaign after more people started showing up at the Essex food banks. "The demographics have changed," Pulleyblank said. "Before, it meant people from this area would have to travel 40 kilometres to Windsor to get to a food bank. But Essex County's population is exploding. Things are changing. The need is changing." Proceeds from the campaign will be distributed to four area food banks the Essex Area Food Bank, the Essex Salvation Army Food Bank, the Harrow Food Bank and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in McGregor to support their holiday food basket programs. "There is a lot of need," Pulleyblank said. "You just have to talk to the Salvation Army in Essex and they'll tell you. They have hundreds of people coming out every month." Last year, Pulleyblank said the Goodfellows raised almost $20,000. This year, the final tally is over $40,000. Proceeds from the campaign will go toward purchasing food baskets that include turkeys for the holiday season. Station 1 volunteer firefighter and campaign coordinator Don Parsons stood on the corner of Maidstone Avenue and Talbot Street in Essex selling papers from dawn to dusk Friday. "It really brings the station together and allows the guys to come out and give back to the community," Parsons said. "You get to see everybody - the community is unbelievable." Firefighters from stations in Gesto, Harrow and Sandwich South were also involved. Essex Fire Chief Ed Pillon said the campaign has been even more successful than last year. "We've had more of our fellows out and the response from the community has been overwhelming," Pillon said. Pillon said there were 20 to 25 firefighters out at any one time. "As firefighters, they see it as giving something back to the community," he said. "They're very gracious and are thankful to the public. We're there to serve the general public for their best interest." Description of Land: 2.
