Cpl. Jason Olson, a member of the 31 Brigade Group in Windsor, and Petty Officer Jeff Pearson of the Canadian navy, manned a booth in the parking lot of Southland Plaza. The pair gave information behalf of the on Department of National Defence to people who stopped to learn more about a career with the Canadian armed forces. Olson said careers in the military are available for people ages 16 to 57. At the age of 16 teenagers can enroll as reservists. Although there is a moral obligation to serve, Pearson said, it is possible to leave the assignment. "We're just giving information packages about the different jobs we have. They can check it out online and get back to us if they're interested," Pearson said. Seventeen year olds can enlist for a full-time assignment in the military with a parent's permission. The visit to Essex was the second leg of the tour of Kent and Essex counties. Pearson said 30 people in the region have signed up for full-time and part-time assignments this summer. The area spans from Windsor to Blenheim and Ridgetown, Olson said. Response to the recruitment tent was positive, the men reported.
