ESSEX CROSS BAKERVILLE Weather this past week has been warm and dry and several farmers started their wheat harvest, but we had a thunderstorm overnight on Sunday, which will slow them for a few days. Happy birthday on Thursday to Dave Trimble and on Saturday to my sister, Jean Warnke, as she celebrates another year, and on Tuesday next Bruce Dunn celebrates another year. Happy anniversary wishes on Saturday to Don and Net Market as they celebrate 45 years, and to Bill and Shirley Baker as they celebrate the same day but theirs is number 39, and on Sunday to Ron and Donna Baker as they celebrate their first anniversary. The Essex Fun Fest was held on the weekend with an excellent crowd attending in the glorious weather. The parade was miles long and the classic cars were a great display. Plan to attend the Cottam Rotary Horse Show and the parade this Sunday in Cottam. The Pleasant Valley Community Club held a Pepper party Tuesday evening with the winners being: Velda Garant, Don McMurren, Don Ames, Helen Slavik, John Neufeld, Joan Dresser, Donna Eyraud and Charles Chevalier. There will be a pancake breakfast in the park at 8 a.m. The western, buggy and draught pony horse show starts at 9 a.m. At 12:30 the parade starts and the Ontario Provincial Police Golden Helmets Motorcycle Ride will be in the parade. Horseshoe pitch registration is at 11:30 a.m. The kid pedal tractor pull at 2 p.m. and the dog agility demonstration take place in Ridgeview Park. Two weeks ago (June 25-July 2), the Essex-Kent Junior Farmers hosted delegates from around the world. Everyone had a great time. Strawberry season is over and now we get to enjoy local raspberries and sweet corn. We are so blessed to live in such a bountiful area. Congratulations to one of the newer residents of Maidstone, Blair Maleyko, owner of Saldary Chocolate and Candy Creations, on his marriage to Marie Boutros of Tecumseh on July 2. The beautiful ceremony was celebrated at St. Peter's Maronite Church with the bride's sisters, Rebecca as maid of honour and Carol as bridesmaid. The bride's cousin, Gabrielle Boutros, was the flower girl. Attending the groom were his brother, Troy Maleyko as best man, the bride's brother James as groomsman, and cousin of the groom Jonathan Andary as the ring bearer. Maidstone singers Jenny Schuurman and Cassia Hebert were accompanied by Bob and Roger Bastien on guitar. Following the mass, guests attended a reception at the Fogolar Furlan Club. Some members of our congregation will be giving leadershhip to a worship service at Co-An Park in Each year, the Rotary Club of Essex sponsors a student from Essex District High School to travel to Ottawa for three days in the "Adventures in Citizenship" program. This year, Landan Dallyn was selected to join over 200 students from across Canada. The students tour Parliament, RCMP headquarters, several museums, hear speeches from politicians and enjoy the friendship of other students from every corner of Canada. Landan returned with many pictures and stories to share with Rotary members and is pictured above with Rotary President Maj. Paul Gilbert.
