SSoouutthh BBaayy UUnniitteedd CChhuurrcchh By Dorothy Speirs The South Marysburgh Mirror March 2024 /13 At South Bay United Church, our outreach pro- gram, both to the County and to the wider world, has al- ways been of great import ance. Thanks to the generosity of our church congregation and of our friends in the com- munity, we are able to share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. Locally, we were able to make substantial donations in 2023 to a number of chari- ties, support organizations and to our hospital's building fund. On the international level, we also provided fund- ing for the Canadian Food Grains Bank. For more than a quarter of a century, South Bay United Church, along with the Men's Club of the Eastminster Unit- ed Church in Belleville, has supported the Foodgrains Bank, which is a partnership of fifteen Canadian denomi- nations and church based agencies working together to end global hunger. It is estimated that up to 783 million people in the world are facing hunger and do not enjoy food securi- ty. The Foodgrains Bank works with locally based organizations in develop- ing countries, not only to meet emergency food needs but also to achieve long term solutions to hunger world wide. Our congregation and community members have been generous in giving not only funds for this out- reach but by actively par- ticipating - donating land, labour and supplies each year. The Government of Canada supports the or- ganization by providing matching funding up to a ratio of 4:1 for food assis- tance in the developing world - about $25 million each year.
