Subject: Findings: Vernon Internee Headstones & Monument Project | 53 Internee Research Report Wasyl] Shapka #974 aka V.Szapka Wasyl Szapka Wasy] Shapka was born on February 23, 1892 in Koczman (presumed to be Kotzman), Bukovina, Austria according to his Registration of Death. Currently, no church records can be located to confirm the accuracy of the date. The name of Wasyl’s father is recorded as Hryhor Shapka on the Registration. There is no next of kin recorded in the War Graves Registry for Wasyl. Wasy] arrived in Canada about 1908, into the district of Yale- Cariboo and to Vernon in late August of 1918. Reviewing records from Library and Archives Canada and the National Archives and Records Administration uncovered a number of immigration records for a Wasyl Shapka / Szapka. The most likely record is one detailing the arrival of a Wasyl Shapka into the Port of Montreal, Quebec on June 23, 1908 on the ship Montezuma that departed from Antwerp, Belgium. The final destination is recorded as Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is the only record for a Wasyl Shapka that was born around 1892; however there is a discrepancy in that this Wasyl Shapka came from Galicia, not Bukovina. There were several possible enteries of a Wasyl Shapka / Szapka in the 1911 Census of Canada and the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, however there was not enough proof provided to conclusively state any are the correct Wasy] Shapka. No record of marriage was found for a Wasyl Shapka / Szapka. According to his Registration of Death it lists his marital status as “single”. Wasyl’s occupation has been recorded as a labourer. In Roll Call complied by Lubomyr Y. Luciuk in 1999, a Wasyl Shapka was interned at Mara Lake, British Columbia on July 4, 1916. A second Wasyl Shapka is listed as being interned at
