Subject: Findings: Vernon Internee Headstones & Monument Project | 18 Internee Research Report Ivan Jugo #108 aka John Jugo Ivan Jugo was born in March of 1887 in Fiume, Austria according to his Registration of Death. Today Fiume is known as Rijeka, Croatia. Currently, no church records can be located to determine an exact date of birth. Ivan’s next of kin recorded in the War Graves Registry are two brothers, Frank and Virgo Jugo at Mihontici (presumed to be Mihoti¢i) Post Office in Francici, Austria. Today Mihotiti is a settlement of Matulji, Croatia. Ivan arrived in Vernon in September of 1916. Reviewing records from Library and Archives Canada and the National Archives and Records Administration uncovered two possible immigration records. The most likely record is one detailing the arrival of an Ivan Jugo into the Port of New York (Ellis Island), New York. He arrived on April 6, 1912 on the ship Atlanta that departed from Trieste, Italy. The final destination is recorded as Westminster, Canada. This record lists the mother of Ivan Jugo as Rozalija Jugo. However, the one detail that fails to fit completely is that the last permanent residence of the Ivan on the record was Peru8i¢, Austria, around 150 km away from Fiume. Reviewing border crossing records between Canada and the United States revealed no records for an Ivan Jugo. No record of marriage was found for an Ivan Jugo. According to his Registration of Death it lists his marital status as “single”. According to Roll Call complied by Lubomyr Y. Luciuk in 1999, an Ivan Jugo was interned at Victoria, British Columbia however there is no date of internment listed. No recording of a Jugo is listed in the Roll Call Additions published in 2009. Ivan was admitted to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and died on March 12, 1917 from tuberculosis of the intestines that led to heart failure. According to his Registration of Death, he spent six months
