The Provincial Government although it is throwing a few crumbs to small communities, is pursueing a fundamental policy of the extermination of small communities in Ontario. It has locked into a policy that living in large communities is efficient, and therefore is to be desired. It's because of this that the Ontario Government has made it law that no one else in the province of Ontario can live in rural areas unless they are farming, logging, mining etc. Their program of regionalization of small communities who are equal partners in such things as boards of education, may be definitely advantagious. But it is a tragedy when regionalization involves the subjugating of the small community to the larger metropolis with the eventual result that the small community stagnates, and the larger community continues to sprawl. The province of Ontario should be able to provide its inhabitants with the options of urban metropolis living, small community living, or rural living. What can we as a community composed of individuals who believe in our type of existance do to ensure that our children will also have a choice of the style of life they wish to live. I think first of all we have to stop being impressed by bigness ourselves. Because something is bigger it is not necessarily batter. This extends all the way from schools, stores and hospitals, to whole communities. We must stop being impressed by big government and stop acting like poor country cousins. The Ontario bureacracy as represented by the Ontario Department of Municipal Affairs operates on the principal that when they shout jump, small town politicians are going to ask, how far. Our Municipal officials must realize that they are working not for the people Ontario Department of Municipal Affairs but that they are employed and are working for the people of Nipigon, and for the maintenance and improvement of our way of life. This may seem to be an idealistic dream, but it seems to me if we can hold out long e-nough that the larger centers will become so impoverished of human values that they will choke themselves to death and the concept of the small community will no longer be considered a place for those to live who are unable to live anywhere! else.
