Wednesday, January 17, 2007 · Page 23 Curling Club of Kingsville Do you feel as if you need some exercise after too much celebration during the holidays? The Curling Club of Kingsville (CCK) is once again offering fun, fitness and fellowship for the upcoming winter months. We have a variety of leagues to choose from and various social events to enjoy. On December 13 the County Windsor/Essex Senior Games Curling Tournament was held at the club. The event was coconvened by Chuck Beedle and Roger Taillieu. The sponsors of this great event were the "Windsor Seniors Curling Association" and the "Windsor/Essex County Senior Games Committee". Gold, silver and bronze were awarded to the top three teams. The first place winner was the Bob Cunningham rink from Roseland Golf and Curling Club. The second place winner was the Peter Timmins rink from the Curling Club of Kingsville and the third place medal winner was the Harvey Wiltshire rink, also from the Curling Club of Kingsville. The Ontario finals will be held at Brockville, Prescott and Gananoque in February. As the first place winners are unable to attend, the Peter Timmins rink will represent the area. We wish the team great success. What better way to finish out the year, 2006, then to participate in an enjoyable evening of dining and dancing. The 90 party goers at the New Year's Eve party were treated to hors d' oeuvres, a roast beef and chicken dinner and a delicious dessert. The DJ for the evening was Mark Boscaral who kept everyone on their feet all evening. Thanks to the organizers Sarah Shklov and Sandy Brook and to chef Terry Donovan and his "team" for welcoming us to 2007. Our Rock N' Curl nights are always a great hit. Come out for six ends of curling followed by pizza, refreshments and a game of crud. What a great opportunity to try the sport of curling. For more information about leagues and upcoming events call Pat Laing at 519-733-5731. Ask the Home Inspector A recent caller has asked for some clarification regarding the exterior of a home so, in plain English, here it is. Siding, Eaves, Fascia and Soffits: Wall cladding or siding has a job on its own. Besides giving your home a nice look, the main job is to protect the frame work. Moving upward, the eave, which is also the overhang, is the lower portion of the roof that extends beyond the outer wall of the home. It is made up of the fascia, which is the outer board laid vertical at the edge of the eave. Finally, you have the soffit, which is the under side of the eave. (Easy enough)? To inspect all three of the above components, the inspector will look for the following: Warping, cracking, twisting and leaking are the most common problems that a wall cladding will run into. The inspector will look for visual signs of deterioration of materials such as rotting wood, peeling paint or cracks in stucco. Any missing caulking will be noted as well. The trim includes the eaves, soffits and fascias. If not covered in vinyl or aluminum, the inspector will pick random areas and poke the wood with a small test probe to test for damaged or rotted wood. Doors and Windows: The inspector is required to operate all entry doors and a representative number of windows. In a lot of cases, we do come across windows that have broken mechanisms, bad seals and/or painted completely shut. The average purchaser really does not recognize the detail that a Home Inspector completes during the Home Inspection due to the fact, they are so caught up about their possible new home. Glazing: This is a term that refers to the window pane made up of glass or other material. Each layer of glass is called a light. The term multiple lights refers to when you have two and three layers of glass that are sealed tightly together as one. Tempered glass: This type of window is very hard to break. When it does break, the pane shatters into small but smooth edged cubes. Laminated glass: When this glass is broken, a sticky plastic inner layer between lights hold the broken pieces somewhat together so it now looks shattered. Doors: All outside doors should be inspected and operated during the Home Inspection. Entry doors for today's standards call for a fire-resistant type of door. Some area codes require a rating label on the edge of the door to prove so. Watch for doors and windows pulled out of square. This is a tell-tale sign of a much more serious problem such as foundation settlement which we talked about back in August. This article is provided courtesy of Bob Price Home Inspection Ltd.
