The CFB sends not only food but also developmental aid to countries so they can feed themselves and pay for education. Neudorf said the money used to have to be spent in Canada before food was sent over to cash-strapped areas of the world. "It almost became a subsidy and that can often spoil their own production," he said. "It hurts their local development. Now, the Canadian government has said they can buy food from their own local farmers." In Ontario there are 133 CFB projects totaling nearly 3,500 acres. Families in countries such as North Korea and Ethiopia have been fed by the project. Locally, the Harrow Growing Project was supported by five volunteer farmers, with seed donated by David Santo Farms, a Pioneer dealer from Essex. The Agris Co-operative Cottam branch donated the herbicide, Cargill Ag Horizons from Harrow donated the fertilizer, and ERCA donated the land. Mennonite Harrow Church Pastor Greg Yantzi said there is also a lot of support and promotion among the congregation. "This is one way we can make a significant contribution to an organization," Yantzi said. "One of the realities we are facing is that many people in the world are faced with famine. Their farmers work just as hard but often their crops fail because of climate or other reasons. This is our way of showing grace and helping them out." Karl Neudorf stands in front of the Harrow Growing Project's 40-acre soybean field last week. In the spring, Neudorf planted the crop that turned its harvest into cash last week to be sent overseas and into Third World countries.
