A 1947 Ford for $60 In September 1960, Paul Calderone, age 15, found a 1947 Ford coach at Target Auto Wreckers on Eastern Avenue in Toronto. It was in running condition and for sale for $60. He had to have it, even though he wasn't yet old enough to have a driver's license. And he only had $40. No problem. The fellows at Target sold the car to him "as is" and delivered it to his parents' driveway, then removed all four tires and rims and took Paul Calderone and his 1947 Ford coach. them back to the wrecking yard until Calderone paid the $20 still owing. Now his car was sitting on four cement blocks in the driveway. He was 3-2 lead. Going into the third period Essex fought back and with 12:21 on the clock Brad Quinlan scored with assists going to Mike Ouellette and Lucas Gallant making it 5-4. With 6:05 left in the third period a wicked wristshot by Lucas Gallant hit the crossbar, post and in, assist going to Spencer Woltz. Lucas Gallant's "pretty" goal brought us back to end the game in a 55 tie. This weekend the Ravens played back-to-back games against the Riverside Rangers. Friday night the Ravens certainly came to play. They started scoring early with two quick shorthanded goals from Spencer Woltz and Luke Gallant. The Ravens held on to their going nowhere fast but at least he could slide behind the wheel, turn the key, press the starter button, and rev up the old flathead V-8 engine. He could even go up and down through the gears while leaning out and looking back at his rear brake drums spinning around. But he was itching to get the car on the road. Every time he saved five dollars from odd jobs, he rushed to the wrecking yard and paid for another tire and rim which he rolled along the sidewalk the ten blocks to his home. Finally all four tires and wheels were on the car. He fired up the old Ford, popped the clutch, and stepped on the gas. His black leather jacket harmonized nicely with his $60 car, and he always drove with his elbow out the window, just like James Dean. lead and ended the period ahead 2-0. Just over a minute into the second period Spencer Woltz scored his second shorthanded goal of the game. Later on in the period Riverside scored to end the period 3-1. In the third period the Ravens put the game away with four goals scored by Brad Quinlan, Mike Ouellette, Dan Bacon and Nick Fournier. They held on, with strong defence and excellent goaltending by Chris Zelko, to win the game 7-1. On Saturday night the Ravens showed up to play again but Riverside also showed up for the game.
