Wednesday, December 6, 2006 · Page 14 MAPLEWOOD TIGER TALES Maplewood student Holly H. tries to catch the play bills flying inside the "Money Booth of Fortune" during a recent awards assembly for our fundraising efforts. One student from each division earned the chance to grab "cash" in the booth as a reward for being the top earner in catalogue and candle sales. There was also one "wild card" winner from each division. The play cash was then redeemed for the real thing! Maplewood staff and students would like to thank all those who supported this fundraising effort. The profits will be put toward many worthwhile projects for our students. Holy Name Hawk Happenings Students took home their first term reports last Monday. Parent-teacher interviews for the first term took place on Nov. 30. The school library was also a busy spot as the annual Book Fair was set up and ready to go. Students had the opportunity early in the week to preview the books and other interesting items and to create a wish list of items that they hoped to purchase. HNS would like to thank everyone who visited and purchased items from the book fair. HNS is pleased to announce our participation in a new project for Junior grade-level students. This project, called Effective Writing in an Inclusive Classroom, has been developed to assist teachers in improving student writing in the Junior grades, with a focus on students who have special needs in the area of written communication. Staff and students will benefit from regular access to a team of system-based teachers for the remainder of the school year. Our involvement will also afford us the benefit of extra technology and writing resources. Students in JKM met with their Grade 6 "buddies" from Mrs. Mastromattei's class last week to make their advent chain links together. Children will take one link off the bottom of the chain each night before bed to help them count down to Jesus' birthday. This activity will assist students in understanding how many more days remain until Christmas, as well as reinforce their counting skills. Thank you Grade 6's! On Nov. 30, students and staff gathered to acknowledge the recipients of November's `Student of the Month' honours. The theme was `Respect'. Recipients were honoured with a certificate acknowledging their contributions. Photos of the `Students of the Month' are posted in the main intersection of HNS. The theme for December is `Christianity'. A fog day on Nov. 24 resulted in the postponing of `Loonie License Day until Nov. 29. Students could purchase up to five privileges (e.g. chewing gum, wearing a hat, snacks all day, listening to music during work periods) at a cost of $1 per privilege. Proceeds benefited the HNS fund and also supported two worthy community groups the St. Michael's Alternative (Victoria Campus) Food and Clothing Drive and the Essex Food Bank. An astounding total of almost $1500 was raised! Thank you to all who participated by making worthwhile donations.
