"Volunteering is most fundamental course of action a citizen can take ­ for philanthropy and for making your community a better place to live," Holling told the audience. Outgoing Mayor of Lakeshore Bob Croft echoed the sentiment by saying volunteering plays a significant role in the town. "You help make our community strong," Croft told the volunteers. Those recognized for this year's Community Service Award included eight individuals who each worked to benefit the town in different ways. Barry Gerth, a member of Skate Lakeshore Figure Skating Club as treasurer and webmaster, spent many hours over the past year organizing events and seeking sponsorships, Kazlauskas said. Jack Morris has worked with senior citizens and young people in Comber to establish a town park and community centre. Doris Sauve has spent the past 15 years serving Lakeshore's Squirettes of Mary, girls ages 11-16. As a counsellor, Sauve has worked with more than 100 young women and volunteered thousands of hours of service to the community. Sarah Little, Marissa Chauvin and Kristen Dupuis were recognized as being role models for young girls in their work for the Squirettes of Mary. Doreen Broadbent has been well known for her work as a member of the Community Lakeshore Policing Committee since 1993, Kazlauskas said. She has also volunteered at Windsor's Downtown Mission and spent time campaigning door-to-door for the Kidney Foundation. As a member of the Belle River BIA, Linda Lloyd Dupuis has volunteered many hours to the community, serving its residents. In the winter she helps to decorate Belle River's Notre Dame Street with a festive, holiday flair and has also worked with the Lakeshore Horticultural Society. "We're here today to help each other out," Kazlauskas said at the end of the ceremony.
