Holy Name Hawk Happenings After a very warm, exciting and relaxing summer break ... school's back in! HNS would like to welcome back all staff and students from their well-deserved hiatus! An even bigger introductory `welcome' goes out to newly registered students who have and will continue to receive a good dose of `Holy Name School Spirit' from their new classmates and teachers. A special welcome to the many new faces who have joined the HNS staff, as well ... the grade ones welcome Mrs. Kennette and Mrs. Novakovic; the grade twos are enjoying their time spent with Mrs. Harris and Ms. Evon; in grade three, we have Mrs. Cipparone, Ms. DeSando and Mr. Collins; and the grade fours have had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Bonura. HNS would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new Educational Assistants, Ms. Poloni and Mrs. Meloche. In school news ... It is that time of year again - Student Council election time! Students from grades 4-8 will be running in class elections for the position of class representative beginning the third week of school. Students are encouraged to vote for two student reps in their class. The class rep should be someone who is dedicated, energetic, organized, a positive role model, is respectful of staff and fellow students, and works well with others. Candidates may campaign for their positions by making posters and signs to hang in their classroom. Each candidate is encouraged to prepare a 30 second to 1 minute speech explaining why their classmates should vote for them. Once the class reps have been elected, an additional election will take place to determine the Executive Student Council positions. Holy Name Elementary has had a fantastic group of student leaders over the past two years and this year should be no exception. Good luck to all students running in this year's election! With this school year just underway, there are sure to be many more exciting events to come so ... stay tuned for all the latest!!! Free Press Photos: Sarah Fisher Maplewood Tiger Tales School Spirit Tiger Style This year at Maplewood, boosting school spirit will be a project for all! Created by Mr. Ruggirello and Mr. Spagnuolo, this new program is called "The Maplewood House Team Challenge". Every teacher and student is placed into one of four Tiger teams. Each team name is an actual species of Tiger. There are the Orange Bengals, Green Balinese, Red Sumatrans and the Blue Siberians. This program will hopefully promote school spirit. Positive behaviour is rewarded with points. At the end of the year, the team with the most points wins the challenge and will receive a prize. Look for updates in future articles. Go Tigers! by Vicki VanGent Fundraising Fanatics On Sept. 11, students were excited to learn that they would be starting a fundraising campaign. Just from all the smiles on faces, staff knew students were motivated to get started. The purpose of this fundraising event is to support a number of great causes. The profits will go toward supporting the cost of field trips, special visitors and fees for sport tournaments. Money will also go toward classroom items and supplies to make learning more fun and effective for both students and teachers. The fundraising campaign consists of selling candles and household decorating items. Items can be found in a fabulous catalogue called "A Time of Joy 2006". Also a number of different types of chocolates can be purchased. Mmm ... yummy! Many students are looking forward to the prizes to Colchester North School News We're back! PARKS AND RECREATION be won. The top three sellers will get a "once in a lifetime" chance to enter the Money Booth of Fortune! Fake money will be blown around inside the booth and the students have to catch it. After the fake money is caught, it can be exchanged for some real cold hard Canadian cash! There is also a prize rally based on the fundraising amount brought in. Information about this is in the fundraising package. There's more! There are some great incentives to be offered. If Maplewood raises $8,000, Mr. Ruggirello will shave his legs! Mr. Marentette will also shave his head bald! And if Maplewood raises a whopping $10,000 Mr. Archer will shave his head and legs! How funny would that be? Students are working as hard as they can to make these incentives happen. What a great way to start off the school year.
