(From an SSJI news release) At the end of February, the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) removed the barn swallow nesting shed at Point Traverse at the end of Long Point in South Marysburgh. The move was part of the wildlife service's plans to re- move all the remaining build- ings in the fishing village that existed there since the nine- teenth century. The members and support- ers of Prince Edward County Field Naturalists (PECFN), Prince Edward Point Bird Ob- servatory (PEPtBO) and South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) sprang into action to protest the demolition and gained a commitment by the CWS to erect an alternate nesting structure at the site of the former nesting shed by March 31. The new alter- nate nesting structure will follow the design of those proven to be effective in other locations in Ontario. Barn swallows are a spe- cies at risk listed as Threat- ened federally and Special Concern in Ontario. The adult barn swallows show fidelity to breeding sites by commonly reusing the same nest. The number of old nests at a site at the start of the breeding season is also thought to serve as an important cue for young birds selecting their initial breeding location.
