7. Ship of the Month - cont'd. after several attempts and some dredging. Another casualty of the storm was the small packet steamer ADELAIDE HORTON, which was only a few months old. She had been launched at Goderich that same summer and was under the com mand of Capt. Duncan Rowan when lost. Just as she was leaving Kincardine, the storm drove her against the south pier. The captain attempted to back her, but her engine went out of gear and the waves made short work of her, as they pounded her and sank her on the spot. KINCARDINE was sold on January 23* 1872, to David Andrews and R. Downey, of Napanee, Ontario. The sale enabled the former owners to discharge the mort gage which had been held by the shipbuilders. On May 9 , 1872, KINCARDINE passed downbound at Port Colborne, laden with 8, 500 bushels of wheat which she had taken from her namesake port. She was unloaded at the wharf of H o l comb and Stewart at Kingston. Downey and Andrews operated KINCARDINE in the general cargo trade on a rou te from Belleville to Oswego and Kingston, with stops at Bay of Quinte ports. However, on a few occasions, she did haul bulk cargoes of ore and grain. On May 29* 1872, she was upbound at Port Colborne with the schooner GARIBALDI in tow. Their cargo was iron ore, bound from Cobourg to Cleve land. Late in November of the same year, KINCARDINE towed the barge DAVID ANDREWS to Oswego from Trenton, both vessels carrying grain on that trip. During the winter of 1873, Downey and Andrews made some improvements to the steamer, as surveys completed that spring gave her a new tonnage of 1 7 6 and her value was increased from $9,000 to $12,500. We assume that the changes involved the addition of passenger accommodations on the main deck. The propellor OSWEGO BELLE, 137 by 26, and 462 tons, was launched by Mel ancthon Simpson at St. Catharines in 1875. This new ship was added to the Downey and Andrews fleet, which by that time had become known as the Bay of Quinte and Oswego Navigation Company. During the winter of 1875-18 7 6 , KINCARDINE and OSWEGO BELLE were laid up at Napanee, where the former was again reconditioned. "The Oswego Palladi um" reported on April 11, 18 7 6 , that "The Bay of Quinte and Oswego Naviga tion steamers will run as follows this season, commencing on the opening of navigation: The steamer OSWEGO BELLE will leave here for Kingston, Belle ville and Bay ports, Mondays and Wednesdays, and for Kingston and River St. Lawrence ports Saturdays. The steamer KINCARDINE will leave Belleville on Tuesdays and Fridays. The boats are fitted and furnished in modern style. It will be seen that the line takes a new departure this season, Toronto and Hamilton and the ports on the River St. Lawrence being embraced on the new rou t e ." By mid-May, the two steamers were engaged on their route, but they got off to a somewhat shaky start. Sailing in dense fog on Saturday, May 20, KINCAR DINE, on her second trip around the route, stranded on the Brothers Shoals nine miles southwest of Kingston. The steam barge ADVENTURE was sent out to lighter KINCARDINE, and she was got off with little damage. Meanwhile, OSWEGO BELLE stranded in the Napanee River and was delayed for some time. This must have played havoc with the line's new schedule. Although we have not been able to identify the location where the work was done, we know that KINCARDINE was completely reconstructed and given a se cond deck during the winter of 1 8 7 8 . She was remeasured at the port of Kingston on June 7, 18 7 8 , by measuring surveyor Alexander MacAlister, ac cording to the rules prescribed by the Merchant Shipping Act of 1854, and he reported the results as follows: Under Deck Tonnage ...... 1 4 5 .87 Spaces between Main Deck and Spar Deck ............. 1 1 9 .38 Saloon Deck .......................................... 7 7 .38 Gross Tonnage ........... ......... 34 2.84 Deductions as per Contra ......... 122.10 Registered Tonnage ................ 220. 74
