In 1954, a group of parents with children affected by MD approached a fire department requesting assistance in raising funds. With support from the fire fighters, MD Canada con- ducted the first residential can- vass in Toronto and raised more than $200,000 for research. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) pledged their continuing support until a cure is found. Muscular dystrophy is a group of neuromuscular disor- ders that are characterized by progressive weakness and wast- ing of the voluntary muscles. Career and volunteer fire- fighters each year organize boot drives, car washes, pan- cake breakfasts, magic shows, Buck For Luck campaigns, pub crawls, ladder-a-thons, roof-top-campouts, raffles, and sporting events in support of an estimated 50,000 Canadians with neuromuscular disorders.
