Bureaus contest The Acton Free Press Wednesday December Fire poster winners honored Five young faces lit up with happy smiles at Milton Fire Hall on Tuesday evening of last week when the winners in Halton Fire Prevention Bureaus 14th annual fire prevention poster contest received their awards at a banquet in their honor Frank of Oakville and of Georgetown were presented with personal engraved desk pen sets and certificates for emerging as the top boy and girl In the county- wide poster contest Principals M Cybulsky of St James Separate School in Oakville and of Howard Wrigglesworth Public School in Georgetown where the winners are enrolled as grade five students accepted the Insurance trophies which their schools will retain for a year Honorable mentions Others honored during the evening were runnersup Kelly Pollock of Public School John Public School Township and John of Holy Separate School Milton Each received an honorable mention certificate and a sliver dollar A fourth runnerup Karen McDowell of Robert Little Public School In Acton was unable to be present for the awards banquet Her prizes will be presented later The Bureau conducted Its poster drawing contest in the grade five classrooms of Halton schools The theme was Fire Prevention In the Home and over 1000 entries were received Ideal winners were selected by Judges from the participating fire departments then the top posters from each went on to the county Judging where the top boy and girl and- four honorable mentions were named Franks and Janlnea posters will next enter a provincial competition speaker Guest speaker at this years banquet was Martin Hurst Fire Marshal of Ontario In a brief talk he praised the students winning posters as an excellent demonstration of fire prevention ideas and artistic achievement Mr Hurst commended the Bureau for sponsoring such a competition and reviewed how has scored many firsts in and fire prevention that it looked on as a model county by fire officials from near and far While he praised the efforts of Ontarios fire service In the past he warned there is much more work to be done With killed and nearly injured and a property loss In over fires in Ontario last year the task of preventing fires must be improved he said The Fire Marshal suggested all of Ontarios 20000 firefighters should be fully committed to the task of preventing fire Chief Clement of Milton who was chairman when the Bureau was organized made the presentation and called him a very dedicated firefighter Mr Hyde is a former lieutenant captain deputy chief chief of the Georgetown brigade and has also served as president of the Fire Prevention Bureau and Mutual Aid special guest at dinner was Mrs Carol nee of Georgetown Back in 1957 she was honored as the first girl to win the Bureaus poster competition Chief Clement presented her with a bouquet of red roses The first boy winner Richard Perry also from Georgetown was working in Ottawa and unable to attend
