SCHOOL BOARD FOR 13 YEARS VOTE A CANDIDATE WITH EXPERIENCE I would appreciate your support on Dec Friday night nomination meeting for the naming of Rock wood village trustees set a new precedent when nine names were proposed for office and five allowed their names to stand on the election slate As township councillor Warren Parkinson so aptly put it maybe It the sewer and water proposition that the hot potato but whatever It Is election fever In Is hitting at high pitch and there will be no apathetic voting attitudes this year The town hall which at the nomination meeting was practically devoid of spectators had a tremendous turnout of citizens who were anxious that enough names be submitted to create the necessity of an election with no trustees sliding Into position by acclamation Murray bows out Nominated as chairman for the evening events Charles 0 first called on the Incumbent trustee board members to speak and last year chairman convey their platforms to the audience Ken Murray lost year chairman said that although he had enjoyed his years on the board he was bowing out his year and did not intend to qualify He thanked his supporters for their confidence but felt that after all his years of office It was time somebody else stepped into his position He referred to the progress the village had made during his terms Mr Murray said no headway had been made on the Installation of the proposed water and sewage system since last summer but imagined that there would be a meeting of the Ontario Municipal Board In the new year and something conclusive would possibly be done at that time He further mentioned two matters which he hoped that the new trustee board would consider and follow up on One was the updating of the billing system for the hydro and also the installation of new street signs He thanked his past trustee members for their cooperation and also Mr 0 Smith speaks Herb Smith another 196970 trustee then was asked to speak After thanking his nominators he gave a short resume of the progress which had resulted since his term of office and said that he would let his name stand and if elected to office he would try to assist In any way possible He felt that as the only Incumbent trustee the Job required at least one man with experience to help the new board and with regional government slated Rockwood could be an Important place Dave was called upon next as first of the nominated candidates He expressed his pleasure that so many people had taken an interest In the meeting i will devote all my time and energy to the Job and to the mutual benefit of the village and hopefully to many people appreciation Mr felt that he had the time and enthusiasm to donate which would be required for public Interest A past candidate who asked the citizens to refer back to Increased hydro rates In 1969 was Don Hilts He referred to matters which he had been involved with during his years on the board and felt that at this time an Important issue was that of the sewers and water He would do his best to see the matter would be conducted to the best Interests of the people In Mr Hilts was on the board at the time of the Initial proposal of the Ontario Water Resource Commission to make the instalment Hot potato Bob Leslie said that he would withhold a definite decision that he was interested in Don s comments on the town water business He referred to the Issue as a hot potato and said that be would certainly not want to make any commitments for any board other than tied say Id try to be responsible The people on the board must years previously and felt that In the case of any work done proper controls should exist with fines as penalties if job Is not kept in accordance with the contract itself He personally thanked past trustee chairman Ken Murray for his several years of office and said that he recognized the many hours of time consuming effort required Although Mr Leslie said that he was most Interested in the community he would like to withhold hla decision Objective look Sandy Hudson next nominee said that If elected he would look at It objectively as to what was good for Rockwood He said he didnt know exactly what the overall effect of the sewer and water Installations will be in the village but I should like to echo Bob Leslie and say 1 would do a lot of listening and at the moment I am uncommitted I loyd Dyer thanked his nominators and said that he was interested the town and its future Although he was not sure he would run he wanted to let his name stand Mr Dyer said that if he did run and was elected he would do his best for the village A latecomer on the scene was Man Harris another longtime resident who said that In the past he had not taken too much Interest in the trusteeship of the community and had no previous experience However events of the past year had made everyone take more interest In village affairs Mr Harris felt that it was the responsibility of the people in to support their elected representatives and with good trusteeship they would be able to study the Information given on important matters and make decision to the best Interest of the whole village I will allpw my name to stand said Mr Harris and if elected I will do my best to serve the people in Rockwood Biggest lineup chairman for the Friday night meeting Charles O Brlen thanked the various nominees and said that the lineup of candidates was the biggest one for a long time Ive been here ten years said the Hydro chairman and there has never been anything like it One resident present at the nomination meeting questioned the chairman as to what was going to happen to the Ratepayers Association when two members of the executive were running for the office trustee Don Hilts one of the members so mentioned immediately said My resignation in the ratepayers association will be given tomorrow morning Dave also a member of the executive said that the function of the ratepayers would continue and that the two groups could work together in an amicable way In the future but that he too would resign from the executive of the Association Can t serve two masters When asked by a ratepayer how the two groups would conflict chairman 0 Brlen said that the ratepayers could not go to the village trustees and question their Judgment If on the trustee board and that nobody could serve two masters George Day also present then said that legally such members wouldn t have to resign but morally they should I believe In the ratepayers association said Mr Day but from a moral angle if nothing else the men serving on the executive and running for trusteeship should resign The question was raised as to the necessity of such a resignation before election when it would be determined as to which candidates had been elected and the matter was left pending Deputy reeve Jlmmie Milne was then asked to speak He gave a welcome to those present and congratulated those men who had been nominated for office with special praise for those who were allowing their names to stand as he felt It was much better to get into office with a race rather than by acclamation Mr Milne touched briefly on last year village progress outlining a few of the particular contributions he had made during his office In the township council He then wished all citizens present the best of seasonal greetings Good selection Bill Adsett township councillor also spoke at the village nomination meeting at which time he reflected on his close relationship to the village of his youth He felt Rockwood nominators had put up a good selection of candidates and said that he hoped when the election Is completed the new trustee members will make themselves better aware and realize their powers are many things that can be done in the village he said and pointed out they as trustees would have Jurisdiction over decisions When township councillor Warren Parkinson was asked to speak he referred to the water and sewer undertaking as the hottest issue Hesaidthenextfew years could be the most trying in the village and he hoped new trustees will use their best judgment This fa a year deal deal candidates for the office of village trustee Dave Bert Smith Don Hilts Sandy Hudson and Stan Harris had qualified Lloyd Dyer and Bob Leslie had not Monty Root who had also been nominated earlier in the evening declined as he felt that he could not fulfil the requirements of the office of trustee at this time Plan to divert Fourth Line around conservation area Grand River Conservation said the present situation there is no way of controlling access to the conservation area Many people park along the township road and enter the park without paying The proposed diversion will divert traffic
