figures new installations In a short discussion with village treasurer Charles OBrien it was he thought it was important the actual facts about Rock woods tax situation in the event of the new sewage and water in should be reiterated Referring to he copy of the white paper issued by the Board of Trustees In April in accordance with the 0 copies of which were also printed in newspaper advertisements Mr OBrien pointed out that on a average Rockwood lot Re water Frontage at per ft Connection to lot Total cost 80 Re Sewers Frontage at Connection Total cost 2640 15 presently a breather Mrs Kathleen Rhodes of Guelph Street spent a few days In Toronto visiting friends and receiving visitors She returned last Sunday and entertained her hostesses at her home in wood for the taxes you pay said Mr 0 Bncn If you want water it will cost you per month and if you want sewers the cost will be per month and the service for both units will be a regular monthly cost of 14 on top of installation It could also be said here said the anxious treasurer that the too to be paid on taxes will continue for years until the entire debt to the O C has been paid off He further pointed out that a cash payment of the water and sewer connection costs would if paid at the time of installation be con siderably less In which case the water connection paid immediately would be with a long range cost of 496 Sewer connections will be with the overall year term amounting to BO OBrien Only per year would be applied to the taxes until the debt Is paid over the 40 year term Home again after a sporadic summer of on again off again vacation days is the Monty Root family of Its been a great summer and its hopeful that reporting days will show more consistency again News and views win trophy Theres something stimulating about a crowd of who dare to congregate together to defend their rights and there wan such an aura of stimulation last Wednesday evening at town hall when some people gathered for the newly formed Ratepayers Association meeting of tho representative crowd who attended it appeared as if at least half of those present were from Eden Mills From where I sat the problems and the facts regarding tho reasons for the necessity of the newly proposed sewage and water system wore presented and explained vocally Better than at any other meeting This writers summarization of the matter would be three fold Firstly 1 If established water table in area Is polluted as clearly Indicated by Mr Gordon Van Fleet engineer of the Ontario Water Resources Commission whether Its caused by local contamination or carried through the rock strata from other sources is secondary We do have a pollution problem which will cither Immediately or In the near future present Itself oven more ex tensively and require restrictive legislation And whether John Doc Invests in a thousand dollar septic system or everyone in the village returns to the age of the outdoor prlvvy we arc not going to alleviate on already acute situation Secondly To subject the community of to on additional quarter of a million dollars plus or minus by by passing the Grand River Conservation Authority grounds as part of the 4 million ex would be ludicrous as this lengthy extension of the system is In no way going to Improve the function of and in fact could hinder the proper operation or tho disposal system Such costs should be the responsibility of the Grand River Authority or absorbed by he provincial government and labelled as pollution abatement The extra charges should not be considered as part of the governments GO per cent grant and should In no way be assessed for that section of piping The village of does not receive one pennys worth or remuneration from the Grand authorities which does of course pay taxes to the Twonshlp of in the same manner as any other citizen or business man Beyond the usual expectancies of the ordinary taxpayer It has no right to special priorities and is certainly not a village responsibility Thirdly It is painful and tremendously sad to have to even consider its necessity but we are thrust Into the dynamics of that grim word progress Maybe the green belt we ore living in could be turning gray but this lght be the liability wo must face for the questionable corresponding asset of population growth The sewage plant as proposed by the 0 W C a Mr Van Fleet Is as we arc tola the best system at the present time but a vehicle Is required to move and dispose or treated effluent As the River is the only one available Rockwood has no other alternative but to utilize said river and if similar difficulties should arise In Ever ton villagers would have to accept the same situation It must be realized that the River is not the Property of any one group or groups of people Including Eden Mills Evert on or Rockwood and also hat we do have a governmental body designated to maintain the control of pollution in all rivers throughout our Province Dragged by car lad in hospital A three way stretch of sporting history was culminated In ball park last Tuesday night when the fighting ball team was with tin- County It
