OUR READERS WRITE Challenges figures o Rockwood Dear Sir Here I am again with another con troversial letter A gentleman In a tetter to the Mercury tried to throw cold water on our hopedfor and much needed water and sewers project In The writer is not being fair and I doubt whether his figures are accurate Some say he Is away out The majority of people in urgently need water and sewers They want to live like other people and avoid disease They are tired of septic tanks leaking Into another mans basement tired of proximity to out buildings which pollute our garden land tired or germ laden wells They want something better We elect a township Council to do our business and they are a group of level headed men ready to work for the good of the people They have the Waterworks Department of the Province of Ontario co operating with them and sharing the cost The writer was not so critical of the cost of the new school which many of us thought exorbitant Everything Is uptodate In that sphere The children in attendance walk on nice new sidewalks while oldsters step painfully over crushed stone After all we want something more than garbage collection and a school for our money He says there are oneoccupant homes here but he doesnt say some of these are the finest residences in Personally trust our competent coun cillors to do a good Job much needed Thanking you again for space I am Yours truly Mlllicent Mliroy Rockwood Ont Presentation to C Browne St Louis Mo July IB Dear Sir A clipping from your June 10th issue came to us in todays mall It contains the story of C K Brownes birthday It so happens that tte know very well having met WTO at many Canadian Woodmen of the World Conventions We belong to the Omaha Woodmen of the World and am president of the Missouri- Kansas jurisdiction Part of our work is to locate and reward unusual acts of and deeds of good will performed by members and or members We located an antique vintage silver veterans honor button and along with a letter from our vicepresident presented it to him Says township council inadequate RR Georgetown July Dear Sir Eaqueaing township reeve George Currie to nobodys surprise cant hear any noise from the dragstrlp Investigating residents complaints he takes a drive all over the area presumably cups his ears and triumphantly declares that the noise from the racing cars Is really no worse than that of the trucks going up the Stewarttown hill His deputy Tom Hill on the other hand must have heard the racket because he offers the singular advise to keep the noise in by putting an earth bank around the area while Councillor Ken Marshall cant think of anything less cynical to say to a complainant than to remind him that the township is not protecting Us residents Sort of Why dont you leave if you dont like it These then residents of Esquesing township are your municipal politicians These are the men entrusted by you to make decisions affecting the entire township This council might have managed to represent the sons of the original settlers for todays complex society these men are utterly and hopelessly inadequate We must make certain to elect an entirely new council for the coming term a council fully aware of and able to deal with the of modern times This new council must face the realities of the it must give us a toning bylaw it must give us protection from speculators In short it must have the welfare of the people at heart The new council moreover will have to unroll the whole question of the and will have to find an answer to the In credible decision of Mr Currie and bis cronlea to allow the construction and con sequent running of the dragstrip in the first Currie company haw been sitting on the townships holding bylaw since last November The Acton Free Pros
