Halton teachers support Toronto demands Sixty six per cent of the secondary school teachers in Halton county have voted to reject current school offers concerning working conditions and have served notice they will support teachers in their fight for quality teaching before talking about salaries Of the teachers who voted 536 voted yes no and there were 18 spoiled ballots Another were absent when the vote wis taken After a meeting of the Branch of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers federation at Nelson High School Thursday teachers returned vote their schools I i press conference Monday OS SI I- president of said there were at least three reasons why they would continue talks on working conditions He said the most import reason was felt the June moratorium on hiring set by the Ontario Trustees Council and backed by the Board is not made with the best interest of our students in mind Mr said it wasn t fair to hold off hiring until June and accused the Boards of of steam roller tactics He indicated there was a rumor around that the Boaid would consider hiring teachers from the system to teach in the secondary schools He said this would hurt both systems He felt teachers in completely support the Toronto demand to be meaningfully involved the decision making process Mr said that with every decision concerning the teacher there should be consultation before lie considers its The Board has agreed to send all reports of proposed policy to the to keep them updated and give them the opportunity to object The teachers objected the desire to refer so many key issues such as class size audio visual technicians and para professionals to committees is unreasonable and the rejection by the Board of such issues as guidelines for class size a change the student secretary ratio and a refusal to increase night school allowances is completely unsatisfactory Martindalc said ma printed release teachers of night school receive 1 an hour unqualified teachers will get it and summer school teachers will get 10 plus extra allowance for responsibility When asked by reporter if Federation had considered the Mr Martindalc said it was difficult to say just how much it would cost but he did say to put visuil technicians in 11 sellouts as requested would cost about or In a printed release from the Ontario Trustees Council of Ontario John Ronson of Burlington said If Ontario school boards were to meet demands similar to those of Ontario Secondary School Teachers federation in Metro Toronto it would cost the provinces laxpa ers hundreds of millions of dollars a year At present there is a shortage of secondary school teachers the luring of unqualified teachers to meet the new demands would be necessary Bcciusc these people ire unqualified it is difficult to see how this contributes to quality which is of the federation slogans says the Council Chairman Many boards do or plan to involve their teaching staffs in discussions concerning working conditions Trustees believe teachers opinions are valuable but tcel that the final decision must be made by the public elected representatives Mr says in to these demands many boards ire being asked for excessive salary increases ranging as per cent If school lo accede to these salary demands by the Federation the education budgets in the province would soar into llie realm of the fantastic says Mr Ronson He reiterated earlier Council statements that the boards stand willing consider the viewpoint of teachers on conditions of work and to negotiate reasonable settlement In the meantime we look to the moderates in the to cd and fully Roust current siluatu explored resolved concluded At I met tint Thursday Chairman of the Negotiation for the Hilton Division S I presented leathers with process report from the negotiating committee His report indicated the request for audio visual technicians the mittcr of class sizes the use of para profes sionals and the matter of professional development were all currently or soon to be under study by various committees and would all be coming before the The report noted there was some concession on the pupil teacher ratio for next year by the Hoard
