The Acton Freo Press Wednesday February 18 1970 Since my last press article on the necessity of family prayer and nationwide prayer and how one man was a great power and exemplar in promoting and bringing back millions of people of different nations to pray to God for guidance and help to live properly and to bring order and peace and love among mankind it has been remarked to me by different people both Catholic and NonCatholic how wonderful it is through the efforts the courage and the self sacrificing service of one man to accomplish so much good among so many people and that it would be befitting to hear of the life the history the background of this man Father Patrick Peyton Was he a genius or a great orator What did he have that others do not have to be able to do so much good for mankind To say the least it was interesting to hear these remarks and to know that some not only read these articles but are really interested in them that they too can benefit by them by becoming better Christians and citizens with a greater love for their neighbor and promoting more love and peace the world And am sure the same interest has been shown in the worthwhile articles written by my fellow clergymen We all have our heroes and heroines to imitate in lite In sports if is hockey Johnny would like to be perhaps another King Clancy or Gordie Howe in baseball another Cobb or Babe Ruth in swimming if a little girl another Marilyn Bell if she loves skiing another Nancy Green In mankind in politics regardless of party the admiration of statesmen still exists for John A and Wilfred Launer And in every walk of life the individual man and woman has his or her ideal to follow in doing good Father Patrick Peyton has been loved and imitated by because of his oratorical skill but of his love for his fellow man regardless of race color or of his humility because he had the strength of his convictionsbcvause he believed in and knew from experience the need and power The Apeak cut By Rev V J Morgan St Josephs Church of and because ins in helping others by good example Father Peyton was born in County Mayo Ireland Jan 1909 of a family who believed in family prayer He was one of nine children With the things of this world his family was poor but with the spiritual things of God love and chanty his family was rich Later he often explained how wonderful it was to live a home of love His father was broken in health and material poverty forced live of the children three sisteis a brother and emigrate Pa USA The great of 1928 was just beginning and they roamed the streets looking for a job His sisters who came to the Slates before the brothers were luckier in getting employment than Patrick and his brother Tom But Tom finall got a job in the coal mines while Patrick searched every day Finally he landed a parttime job with a construction firm but soon learned Hut a married man with a family working for the same firm was deprived of longer hours work and more money to support his family by the parttime work Patrick wjs doing So in charity in order not to deprive the married man more lime he quit His sister better acquainted With the pastor of the parish which they lived Monsignor Paul Kelly told him how Patrick tried day after day to find employment His Reverence gave Patrick a job as janitor of the Cathedral church While doing Ins work he became more of his the vocation priesthood By prayer he finally got the murage to Monsignor Kelly When his pastor heard this lie told Patrick to enrol in high school and invite his brother Tom to leave the mines where many accidents had been happening and become assistant in i tor But wilhm a month Tom joined his blather in pursuit of the priesthood at Christian St Thomas high school Of course both brothers needed to keep their jobs while attending school In 1929 both brothers made a mission and alter much meditation and prayers for guidance decided on the Order lor themselves and went together to South Bend Induiu They finished high school Notre Dime Little Seminary went on to finish work at the University of Notre Dame in June of 1937 In the fall that year they entered Holy Cross Seminary in Washington DC for their final lour year training for the priesthood In 1939 Patricks health down with After a of hemorrh igcs lie was rushed to Providence Hospital under the direction of the specialist Malcolm Lent who later told lie thought he would ncvci live that through Three months later he was scut to the infirmary it Notre Dame In the fall of year Patrick reached his darkest hours when the specialist holding out very little hope for his recovery said that piaycr was the best path to recovery Give up the treatments and trust In prayer because wo are doing is useless ho was told gave choice of three or four operations with the not in favor Ho diked for time o inukc decision and has stated his position In these I really in Calvary felt Unit way but just as with Christ faster came shortly to Him no it to me also rather lager ty one his former professors at Notre heard the news and came to help him make up his mind He remembered the doctors choice priiyei Ho recommended he go God with his petition through the intercession of the Saints especially the Mother ol God mid he acquiesced The doctors did not want to release for six months But he forced the issue by getting an by a specialist in December The result of the ex limitation was he celebrated the of December the same year he had been taken so ill lather Peyton has since said the sentence at the end of the epistle that day struck him He who finds Me finds Life It wis Ins dearest wish to be ordained with his brother Tom but he a year bell mil him in studies Again he states he resorted to and ag mi his was answered for lie was given permission lo be ord with his brother Then six months after his while on in 1942 dine his inspiration to give the rest or his life first in thanking God and the intercession of the Saints and to tell ihc world the power of prayer the need of prayer for person for every family and for nation and not to neglect it So he became the founder of the family rosary crusade of
