I I Esquesing Council should resign OUR READERS WR R R 1 Georgetown On January 1970 Sir Last Friday night Esquesing township council held an extraordinary meeting to decide whether or not a building permit for the erection of a control tower for a dragitrjp should be granted It was the blackest day in the history of that council existence In the face of a delegation overflowing into the halls and corridors of the municipal building who through their presence and their presentations made it clear that they want no part of a dragstrip in their township Council with the sole but notable exception of Councillor Ruu Miller voted to giant the permit There can never have been a more flagrant disregard of the wishes of the very people who chose these men to represent their interests than on the night of Jan 1970 The Esquesing Council has completely and utterly lost the confidence of their constituents and ought to immediately resign from office Much has been said in the last two or three weeks about the disadvantage which the location of a would bring to the municipality most of the arguments had been ably demonstrated and many of them were again discussed at Friday night meeting Nobody not even the promoter himself has as yet come up with a single point in favor of it and when the solicitor for the promoter made a rather feeble attempt to interest the audience in the added assessment generated by the venture he was quickly contradicted by the fact that there is very little assessment value in a stretch of asphalt and a control tower The truth is of course that next to an automobile wrecking yard and a garbage dump a dragstrip is the least desirable enterprise to be found anywhere It is an irresponsibility beyond description to force a monstrosity as this upon the people of and to a large extent those in Acton and Georgetown The decision by the hapless Council must and will be reversed We live today in a transitory period The original farming of this area is to an extent being replaced by residences Re si de nee built by who consciously chose this area because they value the rural atmosphere the clean air the quiet They live in harmony with their farm neighbors and arc together with them the backbone of this region We have a choice We can intelligently use the natural beauty of Esquesing and townships and integrate our modern life into it or we can take a farm in the midst of it and make a out of it And destroy what we hold dear Yours truly Acted contrary to own bylaw No 1 The Esquesing Township council have acted contrary to their own bylaw concerning the sale and use of farm land They have demonstrated again that they condone the indiscriminate use of land in the township They refuse to allow a permit for trailer park for permanent residents in a time such as this where families are finding it increasingly difficult to be yet they allow a man to deceive them into thinking that a drag strip will be of no interference to the township Mr Russell Miller alone upheld the wishes of the voters who elected him The remaining members of council were swayed to vote against the overwhelming numbers of ratepayers who oppose the dragstrip on lot concession The argument put forth that the holding bylaw is not in force is quite false Council should be reminded that they found it necessary to amend the bylaw after it was fust passed to relieve some ratepayers who were being unduly restricted by it If the bylaw was NOT in force in November then there would have been no need to amend it Reeve Cunie has upheld the argument that the socalled holding bylaw is not in force sanctioned by the Department of Municipal Affairs Yet many of his own constituents have been Inconvenienced by a bytaw that by Cumc own admission does not exist One would tend to think that when Mr was interviewed on CHUM two weeks ago TORONTO FINALLY HAS A DRAG STRIP when he stated everything was set for a springtime opening and that everything is now clear for this opening he was working with sure information and that the exercise of calling a special meeting by the council was a ridiculous waste of time By the councils mismanagement they have unequivocally added to the convincing argument in favour of regional government Yours truly Mrs Shirley Moore Mockery of democratic process Dear Sir 1 attended the special meeting on the future of the drag strip at the Esquesing township offices Friday night and I feel that I owe local people not in attendance a description of my experience First I would like to note that the actions and conduct of the council were a mockery of justice and the democratic process As a result Deft the meeting with a sick feeling in my stomach and a genuine concern for the future of our area The format of the meeting the actions of the councillors and the dynamics of their interactions reminded me more of a comic opera than a serious meeting A more vivid picture can be given the reader if I outline the roles and parts played by each member of the council Mr Leslie played the Silent Follower He represented the people with a series of noises and only put a phrase together when he voted to the motion that allowed Mr the building permit for his control tower and therefore the right to have his drag strip Mr Marshall played the Philosopher He talked about the existential philosophy of the younger generation and made reference to the cliche do your own thing using this as his reason for allowing Mr his permit As Mr Marshall continued in his discourse it became evident he had never really read and therefore understood any of the works of the contemporary existentialists Unfortunately Mi Marshall missed one of the most important ingredients of his philosophy That which suggests that one is entitled to self determination do your own thing as long as it is NOT at the expense of others Fortunately this point was brought to the attention of Mr Marshall and others in attendance by Mr M M Coles a wise elder of our community when he quoted the Golden Rule However it appeared the relationship between these two concepts were not comprehended by Mr Marshall Mr Hill played the Master of Ceremonies He was outspoken and never really seemed la focus on the issues at hand He used rationalizations to justify his reasons for allowing Mr to have his permit and most of the time his diffuse verbal presentation was far beyond the thinking person comprehension Mr played the Jester His role was to joke and make caustic comments so that the serious intent of the meeting was never really brought into focus In his intense effort to perform this role he at times seemed to lose the general trend of thought On one humorous occasion a member of a car club spoke and Mr Curric did not realize that this gentleman was representing the pro drag strip faction His only concern was that the fellow was from Georgetown and therefore had no right to attend the open meeting of tsquesing Council Mr Miller played the Representative His remarks and actions supported the feelings and concerns of the people He also had the foresight to be conscious of and concerned about the long range plans for this community Gentlemen of the council thank you again for representing us so well and I hope that you sleep well at night knowing that you have nude a mockery of the democratic process D Craig MSW Councillor Miller acts responsibly R I Limehouse January 25 1970 The Editor Acton Free Press Dear Sir Seldom have so few done so much harm to so many This doubtful honor belongs to Reeve George DeputyReeve Tom HiQ and CounciBoM Ken Marshall and Wilfrid Leslie At a special meeting of council held on Friday January those four men voted in favor of granting a budding permit for the construction of a control tower connection with the proposed drag strip on Lot in the concession of Esquesing Reeve proud of hi yean of service to the township That seems a long enough tunc in which to have enacted the necessary bylaws to prevent such an suable development Any person in the position of Councillor Marshall would have declared his interest in a similar proposed activity in the township and refrained from voting Instead he chose to make the motion to grant the permit Congratulations to Councillor Ruu Miller the only one to act responsibly toward the residents of the district by voting against the motion The above sentiments are shared by vast number of land owneis in Esquesing Township Yours truly D Denny The Acton Free Press January Firefighters hold debate on boundaries
